Minneapolis Convention Center: rigging, floor loads and AV production N096 | https://glmedia.tech/technical-help/minneapolis-convention-center-rigging-pisos-produccion-av/ The Minneapolis Convention Center (MCC) 2026 Meeting Planner Guide, updated in August, sets rules for rigging, labor, floors and utilities. A production quick guide gives a different plot deadline; this guide uses the earlier 2026 manual requirement and flags the difference for Technology Services to resolve. Identify contracted area and dates; submit a plot with point loads, confirm labor and house-system connections, calculate wheel/support loads, and coordinate docks, power, network and safety plans. Published values do not approve a specific setup. 1. Spaces and scope Official plans separate exhibit halls, meeting rooms, Ballroom, Auditorium and levels. Occupancy and height are references; staging and AV change usable capacity. Identify the contracted area, route and current plan before applying a load or service rule. 2. Rigging and approval The 2026 manual requires every rigging plan to reach Technology Services at least 30 days before first move-in. The scaled plot includes suspended gear, point loads, final trims and a reflected ceiling plan; an ETCP rigger reviews it for a fee. Later changes need approval before installation. Items over 50 lb need designated or approved riggers; this threshold is not a point rating. MCC vertical and horizontal limits are in separate technical documentation to obtain for the project. 3. Labor and house systems Full-time AV company leads may install and operate their own equipment; additional labor comes from IATSE or another recognized source. Only authorized personnel operate MCC equipment. Third-party AV integration with Ballroom and Auditorium systems may be allowed for a charge and coordination; the Auditorium requires MCC technicians during operation. Record patch, crew and responsibility. 4. Floors, wheels and supports The manual distinguishes terrazzo lobbies/common spaces from level 2. Table values apply to those zones, not exhibit halls. Wheeled equipment needs a load rating or structural certification plus approved route and protection. The Plaza has a separate rule; do not apply it to interior rooms. Published zone | Max wheel load | Max uniform load Terrazzo lobby/common areas | 2000 lb | 150 lb/ft² Level 2 | 1500 lb | 100 lb/ft² 5. Docks and deliveries MCC keeps dock control while permittee or exhibitor employees may handle their own freight under conditions; extra labor must come from a recognized source. The venue does not provide dock plates, carts or dollies. Ballroom and Auditorium Main use flat access from 12th Street: bring a liftgate/ramp truck or an outside forklift with a qualified operator. Packages handled by Shipping & Receiving follow a separate, paid labeling service. 6. Power, network and services MCC exclusively supplies power and other utilities; Smart City Networks exclusively provides internet, WiFi and telephone. Complimentary WiFi in lobbies and meeting rooms is not a show network. Connecting outside AV to MCC sound, video or lighting systems needs coordination and may add labor and charges. Order event-specific power, connectors, capacity and network. 7. Safety and changes Submit floor plans to Guest Services at least 30 days before move-in; resubmit post-approval changes before setup. Fire Watch may be required for rigging, fog or haze; public events carry the requirement stated in the manual. Keep exits and emergency equipment clear, and distinguish venue review from authority permits. Subject | Manual rule | Before installation Rigging | Plot at least 30 days ahead; >50 lb with approved riggers. | Obtain points, limits and design approval. Floor plans | Guest Services, at least 30 days ahead. | Resubmit changes and confirm safety. AV labor | Own gear by AV leads; additional IATSE/recognized labor. | Define MCC technicians and house integration. Utilities and network | MCC exclusive utilities; Smart City exclusive data. | Assign service and production backup. 8. Event package Collect contract and floor plan, schedule, point-load plot, equipment weights and route, labor roster, service orders, egress plan, resolution of the deadline difference and change approvals. Keep published, contracted and event-approved facts separate. Can an item weighing exactly 50 lb be hung without review? No. All rigging requires prior MCC approval and qualified labor. The manual requires designated or approved riggers for items over 50 lb; exactly 50 lb does not remove review or establish point capacity. Is the rigging plot due 21 or 30 days ahead? The 2026 Meeting Planner Guide and General Service Contractor Guide require at least 30 days before first move-in. The quick guide says a plot may be required within 21 days of an event. Plan for 30 days and seek a written MCC decision if schedules differ.
