Room control
Crestron: identify the room control platform before integration
A Crestron panel alone does not identify the platform controlling a room. Before extending an AV function, identify the processor, panel application and project linking the equipment. This supports a review that preserves what already works.
Three facts that change the path
| Item | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | CP4 versus CP4-R | Control program versus Home platform. |
| Version | Home 4.12 / actual system firmware | Defines applicable documentation and functions. |
| Interface | Panel model and app/project | Separates the visible interface from the action-executing program. |
Tools depend on platform and version
Home documentation for 4.11 and later uses Configure Pro and is separate from the guide for 4.10 and earlier. Choose the manual for the installed system version; screens and steps from the older tool may not apply. The release history also identifies support differences between hardware revisions.
For programmed 4-Series systems, program management documentation identifies SIMPL, SIMPL# Pro and Crestron Toolbox. Ask the project professional who maintains the source files and which upload access, drivers, licenses and credentials the planned work requires.
Conceptual example: selecting a source
In a fictional proposal, the panel requests a “presentation source” and displays available video-system feedback. The button action, processor program, signal path and feedback are separate elements. A panel page change does not confirm an image at the destination.
- Panel/app → function in the authorized project.
- Processor → documented AV device interface.
- Device state → program → user indication.
What to gather from an existing room
An initial review can identify the documentation and AV coordination needed. Those details help define the programming, access and tests that would be required. Access control, fire systems, machinery and motorized movement are excluded.
- Processor, hardware revision and firmware.
- Panel, app version and interface project.
- Current file/configuration and who maintains the editable source.
- Driver or module for each AV device, with version and scope.
- Manual control, verifiable state and recovery review criteria.
