Atomos Shogun Ultra: event monitoring and recording

Prepare camera, signal, media and codec. Separate monitoring from recorded files and verify formats/activations before offering RAW.

Choose recording around the camera and deliverable

Model and use decision

Shogun Ultra is a monitor-recorder with HDMI 2.0 and 12G-SDI input/output for framing, exposure and external camera recording. Do not transfer Connect, Inferno, Classic or AV-19 features.

Atomos states production is discontinued. Check an existing unit’s condition, version and activations; compare a current alternative for purchase. Internal camera recording may be simpler when it meets delivery needs; program recording serves a different purpose.

Case 37: prepare monitor and file

Record camera/recorder model and firmware, selected output, actual resolution/rate, audio, codec and media. Use compatible Master Caddy II/III or AtomX SSDmini media and confirm the SSD for the mode. A USB-C port does not imply USB-disk recording.

Prepare mounting, cable restraint and power according to the guide. Define camera trigger or local control and verify both recording states. Agree monitoring-only LUT versus processing baked into the recording.

Propose a take with representative speech, exposure and movement. Stop, play and copy into editing; check format, color, sound, duration and ends. Monitor picture or camera indicator alone does not validate the external file.

Case 38: requested format unavailable

Start with what the camera outputs through that port, not its internal recording or the recorder’s advertised maximum. Cross-check camera, firmware, HDMI/SDI, frame rate and video/RAW mode in both manufacturers’ current documentation. A video picture does not prove RAW output.

Check activated codec. Atomos describes preactivated ProRes and activation steps for other codecs, including token/compatible camera for ProRes RAW. Do not infer a license or cloud subscription from model name. Record actual activations.

Preserve settings and detected format. Compare known cable/receiver one variable at a time. Without documented RAW support for the combination, compare compatible video, internal recording or another camera/recorder set. Agree with editing before the show.

Solution inquiry

GLMedia can evaluate rental, purchase, installation, integration, configuration or operation. Start with date, venue, approximate camera and footage use. Scope monitor/recorder, media and testing or staffed camera delivery. Confirm availability, activations and exact compatibility.

Does 12G-SDI guarantee every RAW format?

No. Verify exact camera output, versions, mode and supported input.

Does picture mean recording?

Check recorder state and a playable sample with correct sound and duration.

Does a monitor LUT always change the file?

Define monitoring and recording processing separately; inspect an editing sample.

Can we prioritize fast delivery over RAW?

Yes. Compare supported video or internal recording against quality, editing, storage and deadline using an accepted sample.
