AV cable and network troubleshooting

Fluke LinkIQ: check cable, switch port and PoE before testing content

Separate a cabling fault from a network or application issue. Start with the symptom and connected devices even if you do not yet know which section is failing.

Model and scope

LinkIQ is a cable and network tester family. Check the variant, firmware, adapters and remote: LinkIQ, Duo and IE versions do not have identical functions. Wi-Fi analysis belongs to Duo, with regional restrictions on 6 GHz.

Cable qualification up to 10GBASE-T is not TIA/ISO installation certification. Fluke distinguishes that work from DSX CableAnalyzer certification. A cable pass also does not prove end-to-end Dante, NDI or event-control operation.

Connections and limits that matter

Cable and pairs
Tests include wiremap, length and distance to faults. Use the specified remote and accessories for the selected test; simple continuity alone does not validate required performance.
Port and connectivity
The tester can report nearest-switch information, port/VLAN and advertised speeds, plus IPv4/IPv6 ping. Advertised port capability and measured cable performance are different results.
PoE under load
The family checks PoE class and power and performs load testing within its supported functions. Detecting voltage does not prove the real device will remain powered with all ports loaded.

Prepare the system in stages

  1. Identify cable, connectors, port, endpoints and symptom. Preserve previous results and agree on a disconnect window with the operator; do not remove an active event link for testing without coordination.
  2. Select the required test and performance limit. Verify accessories and cable conditions, including the patch cords that will actually be used. Never connect to an unknown interface or power outside instrument specifications.
  3. Test cabling with the remote where required, then check active port, addressing and PoE using the instrument procedure. Label each result with the section, selected limit, date and conditions.
  4. Remove the tester and reconnect the real endpoint. Verify negotiation, power and the application with all planned systems operating. Save applicable reports through LinkWare PC and document changes; ping alone does not validate audio or video.

Example event preparation

For a proposed PoE-camera check, identify the cable and switch port first. Compare cable performance, switch information and PoE results, then reconnect the camera and verify its signal under the expected system load.

If the cable passes but the device is missing, continue through VLAN, addressing, discovery and application checks. Use the diagnostic results to identify any termination repairs or network changes, then agree on those tasks before making changes.

Frequently asked questions

Does it provide TIA/ISO certification?

No. LinkIQ qualifies performance and supports troubleshooting. If contractual standards certification is required, define the appropriate test and instrument.

Does every LinkIQ analyze Wi-Fi?

No. Wi-Fi is a Duo function; verify the model and permitted bands. Do not assign it to the original LinkIQ.

Does a 10 Gb/s result prove the entire network?

No. It applies to the cable, limit and conditions tested. Switch capacity, combined traffic and application operation need additional checks.

Does the PoE test replace the endpoint?

The test load helps verify available power. Reconnect and check the real device and total system load afterward.

Can it stay connected during the show?

It does not perform the camera or other endpoint’s function. Plan testing and reconnection, and verify service before handing over operation.

What should I send if the fault is unknown?

Describe the symptom and connected devices; you do not need to have located the fault. Add connector photos, any suspected port or section and an approximate distance if known. State whether PoE is used and when the link can be interrupted; include the date and venue when confirmed.
