Stages and drape
Stage on grass: ground, supports and level
Plan the bearing surface and the complete stage system before assembly.
Identify the stage system and site
Ask GLMedia about rental options for your event. The proposal is subject to availability, confirmation of the model and configuration, and the venue’s technical requirements.
This guide covers site planning for a modular stage. Identify the manufacturer, support system, deck height and actual ground; an outdoor deck does not establish ground suitability.
Level and bearing are separate checks
- System example
- STRATA documents separate laydown and leveled floor configurations. Follow the matching support arrangement.
- Ground assessment
- A level deck can still settle if the ground or bearing arrangement is unsuitable.
Deck capacity is not soil bearing capacity. A competent professional must establish suitable bearing and stability for the actual project.
Supports, bearing materials and access
Prepare a surveyed layout, documented supports and bearing materials, compatible leveling and bracing, access and edge protection. Confirm ground protection and buried services with the site.
Survey and inspect the support layout
- Record ground levels, slopes, soft areas and drainage before selecting supports.
- Use the approved system layout and adjustment limits; do not improvise stacked packing.
- Inspect bearing contact, locks, bracing and access before use. Plan checks after rain or a change in ground condition.
Three technical questions
The deck is level. Is the ground approved?
No. Confirm the ground assessment, support reactions and bearing plan. Deck level alone does not establish bearing capacity.
A foot is sinking. Can it be adjusted while the stage is occupied?
Stop use and keep people clear. Have the responsible team assess settlement and correct the support design before reopening.
Record the affected support location, visible settlement and recent rain or changes in loading for the responsible team. Keep the area isolated; do not try to establish soil capacity by adding people or equipment as a test load.
Can adjustable legs correct any slope?
Check the actual leg extension, bracing and height limits in the system manual and project layout. Redesign the arrangement if those limits cannot be met.
Before anyone uses the stage
Do not carry roof, LED or scenery loads into the deck unless the complete load path is approved. Reassess changes in rain, drainage or ground condition.
