Portable generation

Inverter or conventional: planning the choice

Technology helps selection but does not guarantee AV compatibility. A useful comparison starts with the loads and uses specific model data.

Compare more than the label

An inverter uses electronic conversion to produce AC output. Honda describes regulation and variable speed in its range. A conventional generator produces AC without that same conversion chain; performance depends on its design and regulation.

What to send for a power review

Planned location and operation

Run a fuel-powered generator outdoors, away from openings, with exhaust directed away from buildings and people. An enclosed tent, garage or equipment room is unsuitable, even with ventilation. An automatic carbon monoxide (CO) shutoff does not permit indoor use.

In the United States, CPSC recommends at least 20 ft (about 6.1 m) from buildings. Also check the manual, air intakes, audience areas and venue rules before choosing a location. In Argentina, check the local equipment version and the jurisdiction’s and venue’s requirements.

Plan for a dry surface and rain protection as specified in the manual, without enclosing the exhaust. Shut down and let the generator cool before refueling. If the site cannot support these conditions or the required breaks, compare another power source.

Never feed building wiring through a wall outlet. If the project requires a transfer system, request an authorized system and review by qualified personnel. That review must cover protection, grounding, neutral configuration and distribution; do not use improvised adapters.

Frequently asked questions

Does inverter mean compatible with everything?

To assess suitability for your equipment, check its power requirements, transients and the model’s output characteristics. Inverter technology is one criterion in that comparison.

Is a conventional generator ruled out for AV?

Not by name. Required output quality and response must be evaluated for the model and loads.

How should I compare published noise ratings?

Compare figures measured at the same load and distance using the same method. Then check whether the noise level and other characteristics fit the venue and event.
