Portable generation
Portable generator runtime: load and fuel
“Up to eight hours” alone does not establish event runtime. The figure needs load, fuel and the documented version’s conditions.
Read the conditions with the hours
For example, Honda lists 3.3 hours at rated load and 8.6 hours at quarter load for the U.S. EU3200i. Do not apply 8.6 hours at full load or interpolate a guaranteed runtime between the figures.
- Include setup, testing and strike in the schedule.
- For uninterrupted use, review venue supply, batteries or a designed continuity solution; refueling while running is not an option.
What to send for a power review
- Planned loads by time period, fuel and exact source reference.
- Acceptable breaks and operator logistics for shutdown, cooling and refueling.
Planned location and operation
Run a fuel-powered generator outdoors, away from openings, with exhaust directed away from buildings and people. An enclosed tent, garage or equipment room is unsuitable, even with ventilation. An automatic carbon monoxide (CO) shutoff does not permit indoor use.
In the United States, CPSC recommends at least 20 ft (about 6.1 m) from buildings. Also check the manual, air intakes, audience areas and venue rules before choosing a location. In Argentina, check the local equipment version and the jurisdiction’s and venue’s requirements.
Plan for a dry surface and rain protection as specified in the manual, without enclosing the exhaust. Shut down and let the generator cool before refueling. If the site cannot support these conditions or the required breaks, compare another power source.
Never feed building wiring through a wall outlet. If the project requires a transfer system, request an authorized system and review by qualified personnel. That review must cover protection, grounding, neutral configuration and distribution; do not use improvised adapters.
Frequently asked questions
Does a larger tank always last longer?
No. Engine consumption, load and version also matter.
Can propane replace gasoline with the same runtime?
No. Use published runtime and capacity for that fuel and configuration.
How should I use published runtime for planning?
Compare the test load with equipment input during each part of the event. Include testing and coordinate any shutdown, cooling and refueling breaks with the operator.
