Portable generation
Portable generator or battery: small-load alternatives
For small loads, a battery can avoid fuel and exhaust at the point of use. Selection depends on deliverable power and how long it can be sustained.
W and Wh answer different questions
Output power in W limits what can be powered; capacity in Wh helps estimate duration. Ideal example: 500 Wh divided by 100 W gives 5 hours before losses, internal consumption and equipment limits. To select an actual battery, use its usable energy and manual conditions; this calculation does not guarantee runtime.
- Compare voltage, frequency, waveform, surge capability and outlets, along with recharge time and usable energy.
- A generator needs outdoor space and fuel; a battery must also follow its manual’s temperature, moisture and use conditions.
What to send for a power review
- Loads and duration including tests; breaks and available recharge source.
- Model and manual for each option, transfer needs and acceptable noise.
Planned location and operation
Run a fuel-powered generator outdoors, away from openings, with exhaust directed away from buildings and people. An enclosed tent, garage or equipment room is unsuitable, even with ventilation. An automatic carbon monoxide (CO) shutoff does not permit indoor use.
In the United States, CPSC recommends at least 20 ft (about 6.1 m) from buildings. Also check the manual, air intakes, audience areas and venue rules before choosing a location. In Argentina, check the local equipment version and the jurisdiction’s and venue’s requirements.
Plan for a dry surface and rain protection as specified in the manual, without enclosing the exhaust. Shut down and let the generator cool before refueling. If the site cannot support these conditions or the required breaks, compare another power source.
Never feed building wiring through a wall outlet. If the project requires a transfer system, request an authorized system and review by qualified personnel. That review must cover protection, grounding, neutral configuration and distribution; do not use improvised adapters.
Frequently asked questions
Can high Wh capacity power any load?
No. Continuous output, surge and outlet limits also have to match.
Does a battery station work as a UPS?
Not necessarily. Verify support for that function, transfer and each device’s compatibility.
How should I include solar panels in the power plan?
Review the supported charging input and the panels’ expected conditions during the event. Document the expected recharge; panel wattage does not guarantee that energy will reach the battery.
