Portable generation

Portable power for camera and control: continuity

A low-power system can still be sensitive to a brief interruption. Camera and control planning must identify what is lost when each component restarts.

Review the chain that must remain operational

Include cameras, switcher, monitors, recorders, storage, intercom, network equipment and the control computer. List external power supplies and chargers that will operate together. For the load list, find those supplies’ input consumption; the device’s DC voltage alone does not establish it.

What to send for a power review

Planned location and operation

Run a fuel-powered generator outdoors, away from openings, with exhaust directed away from buildings and people. An enclosed tent, garage or equipment room is unsuitable, even with ventilation. An automatic carbon monoxide (CO) shutoff does not permit indoor use.

In the United States, CPSC recommends at least 20 ft (about 6.1 m) from buildings. Also check the manual, air intakes, audience areas and venue rules before choosing a location. In Argentina, check the local equipment version and the jurisdiction’s and venue’s requirements.

Plan for a dry surface and rain protection as specified in the manual, without enclosing the exhaust. Shut down and let the generator cool before refueling. If the site cannot support these conditions or the required breaks, compare another power source.

Never feed building wiring through a wall outlet. If the project requires a transfer system, request an authorized system and review by qualified personnel. That review must cover protection, grounding, neutral configuration and distribution; do not use improvised adapters.

Frequently asked questions

Does a camera battery preserve the entire signal?

Not necessarily. Switcher, converters, network and recording may lose power separately.

Can a 12 V device use any battery?

No. Verify an approved solution, voltage, polarity, capacity and connectors; do not improvise adapters.

Is a small UPS enough for control?

Review the full load, W/VA limits, runtime and UPS behavior with the planned source. Arrange a test that includes the components that must keep operating during an interruption.
