Portable generation
Portable generator for a small event: what to send
A short presentation may need several hours of power for setup, testing and audience departure. Tell us what equipment you will use, for how long and where the event will take place so we can compare power options.
Build a useful starting list
Record each device, quantity and electrical input from its nameplate or manual. Separate simultaneous operation from setup-only loads. A loudspeaker’s audio output wattage is not its electrical input consumption.
- Location, country, date, schedule and venue technical contact.
- Equipment make and model, supported voltage and frequency, and a nameplate photo if information is missing.
- Continuity requirements, possible restarts and acceptable interruptions.
- Proposed outdoor position, nearby openings, cable route, audience areas and rain plan.
Compare the complete power options
A confirmed venue supply may avoid fuel and engine noise. A battery may suit small loads if its runtime covers the planned use. A generator needs outdoor space and an operating and fuel plan. Compare outlets, distribution and staffing as well as power ratings.
What to send for a power review
- If a unit has been offered, send its model, market version, nameplate and applicable manual.
- Without a plan, send a sketch or site photos and identify the missing information.
Planned location and operation
Run a fuel-powered generator outdoors, away from openings, with exhaust directed away from buildings and people. An enclosed tent, garage or equipment room is unsuitable, even with ventilation. An automatic carbon monoxide (CO) shutoff does not permit indoor use.
In the United States, CPSC recommends at least 20 ft (about 6.1 m) from buildings. Also check the manual, air intakes, audience areas and venue rules before choosing a location. In Argentina, check the local equipment version and the jurisdiction’s and venue’s requirements.
Plan for a dry surface and rain protection as specified in the manual, without enclosing the exhaust. Shut down and let the generator cool before refueling. If the site cannot support these conditions or the required breaks, compare another power source.
Never feed building wiring through a wall outlet. If the project requires a transfer system, request an authorized system and review by qualified personnel. That review must cover protection, grounding, neutral configuration and distribution; do not use improvised adapters.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ask before the equipment list is final?
Yes. Send what you have: a schedule, equipment photos or a preliminary sketch. Mark confirmed items and open questions so we can help you identify the next steps.
Is adding the wattages enough?
It is a starting point. Simultaneous operation, startup demand, voltage, individual outlet limits and generator operating conditions also need review.
Can it run behind the stage?
Only if the outdoor location and exhaust meet applicable conditions. Being close to the stage does not establish safety or acceptable noise.
