Portable generation
Portable power for LED lighting: selection data
To select power for LED lighting, gather sustained input consumption, simultaneous startup data and the distribution proposal. Each describes a different aspect of the planned load.
Include startup and operation in the list
ETC documents inrush currents that differ from nominal consumption and explains that protection affects allowable fixture quantities. Review those data along with total watts when assessing the circuit and generator.
- List fixtures, control equipment, nodes, external supplies and powered accessories.
- Use published input consumption for the planned modes and review the most demanding scenes. A dim scene may not represent that condition. Compare battery fixtures or venue power.
What to send for a power review
- Model, quantity, voltage/frequency, consumption and available inrush data.
- Demanding scenes, simultaneous use and provider’s distribution proposal.
Planned location and operation
Run a fuel-powered generator outdoors, away from openings, with exhaust directed away from buildings and people. An enclosed tent, garage or equipment room is unsuitable, even with ventilation. An automatic carbon monoxide (CO) shutoff does not permit indoor use.
In the United States, CPSC recommends at least 20 ft (about 6.1 m) from buildings. Also check the manual, air intakes, audience areas and venue rules before choosing a location. In Argentina, check the local equipment version and the jurisdiction’s and venue’s requirements.
Plan for a dry surface and rain protection as specified in the manual, without enclosing the exhaust. Shut down and let the generator cool before refueling. If the site cannot support these conditions or the required breaks, compare another power source.
Never feed building wiring through a wall outlet. If the project requires a transfer system, request an authorized system and review by qualified personnel. That review must cover protection, grounding, neutral configuration and distribution; do not use improvised adapters.
Frequently asked questions
Is LED emitter power the fixture’s consumption?
Not necessarily. Request electrical input for the complete fixture.
Does power-through allow unlimited linking?
No. Unit, connector and distribution limits must be reviewed with the manual.
Can a trip be solved by increasing protection ratings?
No. Do not change or defeat protection. The provider must review the cause and configuration.
