Portable power for a presentation with sound: load list
To turn “two speakers and a mixer” into a load list, record the models, quantities and how they will be used. If equipment selection is still underway, start with photos or a partial list.
Separate audio output and electrical input
QSC documentation distinguishes amplifier output from typical AC consumption. A figure at 1/8 power describes that program condition; it is not a universal maximum for a sound system.
- Include powered speakers or amplifiers, mixer, receivers, computers, interfaces and chargers.
- List extra loads such as coffee makers or cooling separately. Compare venue power or batteries when engine noise affects speech.
What to send for a power review
- Nameplates or manuals, expected level and duration, simultaneous equipment.
- Microphone positions, outdoor placement and acceptable interruptions.
Planned location and operation
Run a fuel-powered generator outdoors, away from openings, with exhaust directed away from buildings and people. An enclosed tent, garage or equipment room is unsuitable, even with ventilation. An automatic carbon monoxide (CO) shutoff does not permit indoor use.
In the United States, CPSC recommends at least 20 ft (about 6.1 m) from buildings. Also check the manual, air intakes, audience areas and venue rules before choosing a location. In Argentina, check the local equipment version and the jurisdiction’s and venue’s requirements.
Plan for a dry surface and rain protection as specified in the manual, without enclosing the exhaust. Shut down and let the generator cool before refueling. If the site cannot support these conditions or the required breaks, compare another power source.
Never feed building wiring through a wall outlet. If the project requires a transfer system, request an authorized system and review by qualified personnel. That review must cover protection, grounding, neutral configuration and distribution; do not use improvised adapters.

Should I use the watts printed on the speaker front?
Find electrical input consumption in its nameplate or manual; audio output does not replace it.
Does a typical figure cover all programs?
Check the signal level and program conditions behind the published consumption figure. For more demanding use, ask the manufacturer or provider for data that covers the intended conditions.
Can hum be fixed by removing ground?
No. Do not defeat grounding or protection. Record the issue and request a system review.
