Portable generation
Portable generator placement and carbon monoxide
Generator placement belongs in the proposal from the start. Carbon monoxide cannot be detected by smell or exhaust appearance.
Review the site before reserving
Send wide photos showing doors, windows, air intakes and nearby structures. Mark audience routes, operator access and cable routes. Along with space to move the unit, review where exhaust gases will be directed.
- Argentina’s Health Ministry also warns against generators in enclosed spaces, basements and garages.
- If a CO alarm activates or exposure is suspected, move into fresh air and request emergency assistance; do not keep operating to preserve the show.
What to send for a power review
- Country, location, surrounding-area photos and exact manual.
- Rain plan and venue-power or battery alternative if suitable outdoor placement is unavailable.
Planned location and operation
Run a fuel-powered generator outdoors, away from openings, with exhaust directed away from buildings and people. An enclosed tent, garage or equipment room is unsuitable, even with ventilation. An automatic carbon monoxide (CO) shutoff does not permit indoor use.
In the United States, CPSC recommends at least 20 ft (about 6.1 m) from buildings. Also check the manual, air intakes, audience areas and venue rules before choosing a location. In Argentina, check the local equipment version and the jurisdiction’s and venue’s requirements.
Plan for a dry surface and rain protection as specified in the manual, without enclosing the exhaust. Shut down and let the generator cool before refueling. If the site cannot support these conditions or the required breaks, compare another power source.
Never feed building wiring through a wall outlet. If the project requires a transfer system, request an authorized system and review by qualified personnel. That review must cover protection, grounding, neutral configuration and distribution; do not use improvised adapters.
Frequently asked questions
Do open doors turn a garage into outdoors?
No. It is not a suitable location for a fuel-powered portable generator.
Does a CO sensor replace location planning?
No. It adds protection; it does not allow indoor use or poorly directed exhaust.
How should I use CPSC’s 20 ft guidance?
It is guidance for the United States. To plan the setup, also review the unit’s manual, nearby openings and air intakes, audience areas, and venue and local requirements.
