Running and starting output: reading the specification
The largest number often describes a different condition from sustained operation. Treating it as continuous capacity can leave an event unable to handle a load change.
Two separate questions for the source
Compare running output with the loads that will operate together continuously. To assess startup, gather each device’s transient demand and its duration, then compare them with the generator’s permitted response. There is no single multiplier for audio, motors and electronic power supplies.
- Documented example: the U.S. EU2200i manual lists 1.8 kVA rated and 2.2 kVA maximum; the maximum figure is not a continuous rating.
- Also read individual outlet limits and environmental conditions in the matching manual.
What to send for a power review
- Rated input and manufacturer startup data for each load.
- Simultaneous-use scenario and exact proposed generator model.
Planned location and operation
Run a fuel-powered generator outdoors, away from openings, with exhaust directed away from buildings and people. An enclosed tent, garage or equipment room is unsuitable, even with ventilation. An automatic carbon monoxide (CO) shutoff does not permit indoor use.
In the United States, CPSC recommends at least 20 ft (about 6.1 m) from buildings. Also check the manual, air intakes, audience areas and venue rules before choosing a location. In Argentina, check the local equipment version and the jurisdiction’s and venue’s requirements.
Plan for a dry surface and rain protection as specified in the manual, without enclosing the exhaust. Shut down and let the generator cool before refueling. If the site cannot support these conditions or the required breaks, compare another power source.
Never feed building wiring through a wall outlet. If the project requires a transfer system, request an authorized system and review by qualified personnel. That review must cover protection, grounding, neutral configuration and distribution; do not use improvised adapters.
Frequently asked questions
Are maximum and starting power the same?
Not necessarily. Retain each manufacturer’s terminology, duration and conditions.
What should I do if a protective device trips?
Do not reset it repeatedly. Record the indication and request a review of the load or possible fault before returning to service.
Does staggering connections solve every overload?
No. It may change coincident transients but does not increase rated output.
