Choir and seated musicians: geometry, access and edge protection

Define standing, seated or choreographed use before planning a tiered platform.

Define the ensemble and activity

Ask GLMedia about rental options for your event. The proposal is subject to availability, confirmation of the model and configuration, and the venue’s technical requirements.

Record the ensemble and activity. Standing choir treads, seated-musician platforms and choreographed performance need their own documented suitability.

Occupied space, tiers and circulation

Usable space
Draw occupied chairs, instruments, music stands and walking routes; check conductor visibility.
Layout
Show tier changes, entrances, exits and the required connections and supports.

Have the complete layout checked for its people and equipment loads. A musician count alone does not establish capacity or permit dancing.

Guardrails, chair stops and access

Specify compatible guardrails, chair stops, closures and access components as required by the system and site. Chair stops do not replace guardrails.

Checks before ensemble rehearsal

  1. Confirm the seating or standing chart and equipment footprints.
  2. Follow the tiered-system support and bracing instructions; inspect before use.
  3. After release, rehearse entry, seating and exit with the actual ensemble arrangement.

Three technical questions

Can chairs be placed on a standing choir riser?

Do not assume so. Confirm that the model, tread geometry, support layout and edge protection are intended for seated use.

The rear chair legs approach the edge. Can we add a loose timber stop?

Close the affected position and revise the layout or use the prescribed compatible stop. Do not drill or add an improvised restraint.

Draw the occupied chair footprint, rear-leg positions, instrument space and circulation on the tier plan. Confirm the prescribed stop reference and attachment separately from any guardrail. If the occupied layout cannot fit with the required protection, revise it before seating performers.

The choir now includes synchronized movement. Is the same layout acceptable?

Reassess the activity with the system provider and responsible designer. Static loading or a successful rehearsal does not establish suitability for dynamic movement.

Before anyone uses the stage

Keep aisles and transitions clear. Do not move levels or remove protection while occupied; coordinate changes with the conductor and venue.
