Roland V-160HD
Roland V-160HD: sources, USB, and graphics
Ask GLMedia about rental options for live switching and image distribution. We review availability, configuration, and alternatives for your event.
Model and use
With the date, location, and intended use, we can review which equipment and combination can be offered. You can inquire before measurements, drawings, or the final schedule are ready.
Roland V-160HD is an HD video switcher for hybrid events, combining cameras, presentations, and graphics with room and computer outputs. It is not an Ultra HD switcher or the V-1600HD.
USB STREAM sends audio and video to compatible computer software. USB MEMORY handles flash media and system files; it is not a standalone ISO recorder.
Inputs, outputs, and layers
- Inputs
- 8 HDMI and 8 3G-SDI inputs. Multiformat scalers are on HDMI 5–8; input conditions differ. For a computer, check resolution, frame rate, and selected input.
- Outputs
- 3 HDMI, 3 SDI, and USB-C STREAM. Assign program, auxiliary, or monitoring feeds to suit each destination. HDMI OUT 3 follows the built-in monitor and can show menus: verify its role before connecting an audience display.
- Audio and graphics
- 40-channel audio mixer, PinP/Key and DSK layers. Stores up to 16 still images. Check USB and room audio with their controls and receivers.
What to prepare
Identified sources and receivers, Roland-specified power, a monitor, and audio monitoring. Define whether each destination needs program, return, auxiliary, or multiview.
For USB STREAM, a compatible computer and application plus a suitable data cable. For stills, files prepared at system resolution and backed-up USB media.
Basic preparation
- Note the version in MENU > SYSTEM > VERSION and save the event configuration before changing it.
- Set the system format and frame rate; test each source at its assigned input, especially computers and converters.
- Assign outputs and check picture and audio in the room and computer. Inspect OUTPUT FADE, DSK, and PinP before taking program live.
- To load stills, use media prepared on V-160HD with files in its root directory. Back up everything before formatting: formatting erases the contents.
- Rehearse source changes, graphics, USB audio, and room audio. Save the validated setup and check recovery after restarting.
Three technical questions
Why does HDMI work while the computer receives no USB video?
Check OUTPUT FADE, the USB STREAM port, data cable, and application camera/audio selections. Test a direct connection without a hub during diagnosis.
With HDCP enabled, SDI and USB STREAM carry no video/audio. If the program uses unprotected sources and needs these outputs, check HDCP mode before the event. Protected content requires a compatible HDMI path; its protection is not removed.
What should I check when loading a still gives “USB Not Ready”?
Confirm you are using USB MEMORY and media prepared on V-160HD. Before formatting, back up and identify the exact drive.
Place files in the root directory at the resolution appropriate to the output format: stills are not scaled. If it persists, note media, format, file, and version; do not repeat formatting indefinitely as a test.
How do I remove a graphic that stays on program?
Check the active DSK or PinP/Key and its source. The DSK PGM button enables or disables its composition; inspect the correct output before operating it.
Save the useful configuration and rehearse removing that layer. A factory reset is not the first step in identifying an overlay.
Checks by symptom
| Symptom | Check | What it helps distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| No USB picture | HDCP, fade, port, cable, and application. | Switcher output versus USB connection. |
| Still will not load | Prepared media, root directory, and resolution. | Media versus file. |
| Persistent graphic | Active DSK/PinP and source. | Layer versus camera or presentation. |
Limits and precautions
Check release notes before updating: Roland states that 3.60 cannot be downgraded to 3.51 or earlier. Test outside the event and retain backups.
Do not assume scalers accept any signal or all outputs carry the same feed. Check each path against the format table.
Disable phantom power when inappropriate for the connected source. Check input level and monitoring before sending audio to the system.
