Wenger Signature: plan choral risers for a performance
Choose three or four steps, straight or curved layouts, access and transport for a standing choir in a multipurpose room.
Identification and use
Signature is Wenger’s folding choral-riser family. The assembly manuals define its intended use as elevation steps for vocal groups, indoors under normal ambient conditions. Do not treat a narrow choral step as a seated orchestra platform.
Components and variants
- Models
- 3-step 098K053 and 4-step 098K054 in the technical sheet. Identify the supplied model before selecting its instructions.
- Steps
- Published step depth 18 in and rise 8 in. Compare the complete model footprint, not just one step.
- Protection and layout
- Integrated backrail; optional model-specific side protection. Reversible steps allow documented straight or curved arrangements.
- Handling
- Folding configuration and built-in wheels for in-facility movement; verify folded dimensions and the actual route.
Plan the show
For a choir in a multipurpose room, compare a curved arrangement facing the conductor with a straight line constrained by the room. Mark singers’ entry and exit, waiting space, microphones, conductor and audience sightlines.
We can assess sourcing, layout and installation of the risers plus sound, recording and lighting. If part of the group performs seated or needs a different access arrangement, study a separate suitable performance area rather than placing chairs on choral steps by assumption.
Use the arrangement review to check the conductor’s view as well as the audience and camera views. A larger riser set that hides the screen may serve the program less well than a smaller documented arrangement with a separate speaking area. Confirm performers’ positions and access needs before selecting the final option.
Preparation before use
- Identify the three- or four-step model and the supplied backrail, side protection and connectors.
- Use a flat, solid supporting surface as required by the manuals; check the complete room layout and access.
- Have trained staff follow the correct assembly and reversal instructions. Check frame fasteners, backrail and steps before each use.
- Keep folding and movement separate from the performance; move in the documented storage position with the route clear.
Questions and solutions
- How do we choose between three and four steps?
- Can we change from curved to straight just before the show?
- Can singers stay on the risers while we roll them?
- Can we remove the backrail or substitute another rail?
- What if a unit rocks or two risers separate?
- What should we send to discuss a choir package?
- How can a ceremony combine a choir, a speaker and video?
- What if some singers cannot comfortably reach or stand on the steps?
- Should a choir rehearsing seated use the same risers for a standing performance?
How do we choose between three and four steps?
Compare singers’ positions, sightlines, access and ceiling or scenic clearances using the model drawings. More steps do not automatically make a better arrangement. Confirm how performers reach their positions and where they wait; do not derive occupancy from a product photo or a load rating.
Can we change from curved to straight just before the show?
Reversibility is a documented assembly configuration, not permission to twist occupied units into a new shape. The manuals describe reversing steps and backrail components on alternating units for a straight arrangement. Agree the layout early and allow trained staff time for reconfiguration and inspection before performers enter.
Can singers stay on the risers while we roll them?
No occupied transport configuration is established here. The manual requires the storage position for movement and recommends two people for lifting and folding. Plan a clear handling route and separate stage movement from the performers’ entrances. Marketing about one-person mobility is not a staffing plan for every task.
Can we remove the backrail or substitute another rail?
Do not remove the standard backrail as an improvised change: the assembly manual warns it contributes to stability. Wenger lists specific backrail-removal kits with separate instructions for particular configurations. Their existence does not approve removal on your unit. Match any kit and side protection to the exact model and documented layout.
What if a unit rocks or two risers separate?
Keep performers off the affected arrangement. Check the flat, solid base, model identity, fasteners, steps, backrail and the specified unit connector brackets against the manual. Adjacent units require those connectors. Do not pack a leg, drill the frame or bridge a gap with improvised hardware; refer an unresolved condition to the supplier.
What should we send to discuss a choir package?
Start with date, venue, choir size and whether the performance is standing. A rough sketch is enough to explore straight versus curved placement, installation and technical assistance. Add mobility or access requirements, conductor, microphone and recording needs. We confirm exact models, layout, protection and availability in the proposal; seated ensembles require their own platform solution.
How can a ceremony combine a choir, a speaker and video?
Place the choir, conductor and speaker on the sketch before choosing riser quantity. Compare dedicated choir risers and a separate speaking area with another documented layout that leaves the screen visible. We can prepare a cue list and quote microphones, playback, lighting, rehearsal and show assistance separately from riser supply and installation. Keep performer entrances clear; any riser reconfiguration must occur unoccupied with the required checks.
What if some singers cannot comfortably reach or stand on the steps?
Describe performers’ access and standing needs early, without collecting medical details. Compare a suitable room-level position integrated into the ensemble with a separately designed accessible performance area. The plan must preserve participation, sightlines and approved routes; extra steps or a generic ramp do not automatically solve the requirement.
Should a choir rehearsing seated use the same risers for a standing performance?
Treat these as different use cases. Wenger’s historical Timber Creek High School profile lists Signature Choral Risers and Trouper Seated Risers separately. For your program, compare appropriate seated platforms or room-level positions with a documented standing-choir arrangement. We can quote both layouts and the changeover tasks; this case does not prove that chairs fit Signature steps or that older and current parts are interchangeable.
