RF, infrared and assisted listening: choosing a system
Compare routes, feeds and listening needs before selecting a technology.
Ask about rental, purchase or integration
Tell us the use, date and venue, even with an approximate brief. We can assess equipment, integration, preparation and technical support. Configuration, availability and terms are confirmed in the proposal.
Choose by space and use
Assess IR for seated audiences with radiators aimed at listening zones. Columns, bodies, receiver position and ambient light require coverage testing. RF may support moving tours without the same optical condition, but needs regional equipment, coordination and interference checks. Floor area alone cannot select either system.
For sensitive meetings, assess propagation, receiver access and model-specific protection separately. Walls may help contain IR, but inspect doors, windows and distribution; physical containment does not establish encryption. RF products also differ in access control.
Interpretation and accessibility are different decisions
Interpretation needs an interpreter, original-audio monitoring and distribution of each feed. Assisted listening delivers useful audio through a suitable receiver and interface. One system may contribute to both services if designed accordingly; it does not automatically equate them or prove compliance by brand.
Discuss practical needs and compatible accessories without requesting medical information. Headphones, neckloops or personal devices need specific compatibility and support options. Plan signage, handout staff, charging, manufacturer-directed hygiene and returns.
Rehearsal and proposal
- List feeds and listeners; identify exact receivers and accessories.
- Test original and interpreted feeds at real positions, including routes and obstacles. Compare a known unit before changing technology.
- If everyone gets the wrong source, fix routing; if the fault changes by location, investigate coverage. Record limits and backup.
- We can assess IR or RF distribution, installation, receivers and operation. Start with date, venue and approximate needs; then agree the coverage and handout checks.
More setup questions
Does IR guarantee confidentiality?
Not by itself. Assess optical containment and model-specific protection along with equipment access and procedures. Do not assume all infrared products encrypt audio.
Can I use any receiver?
No. Check technology, frequency/format, channel selection and approved accessories. Being wireless does not make two systems compatible.
