KNX and ETS: preparing information for audiovisual integration
To add an audiovisual interface to an existing KNX installation, start with the documented project and the function you want to coordinate. A button brand or an Ethernet port alone does not define the integration path.
Separate bus, interface and application
| Element | What to identify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| KNX medium | TP, RF, KNXnet/IP or another documented variant | Understand the communication path. |
| Interface or router | Manufacturer, part number, firmware and tunneling/routing role | Check how the audiovisual platform can connect. |
| Devices and ETS application | Product reference and application program | Identify available objects and functions. |
| Project and responsible professional | ETS version/build, edition and current project copy | Prepare a review with the configuration owner. |
Each function needs a point list
An individual address identifies a device in the topology; a group address links functions through objects. For each audiovisual point, request its function, group address, datapoint type (DPT), communication direction and state object if available.
The DPT defines how the data is interpreted. Matching data length or copying a room name is insufficient. The list must match the application program of the specific device.
Conceptual example: request a level and read feedback
Conceptual example: an AV panel requests a decorative lighting level and separately displays the value reported by KNX. The system professional identifies the command and state objects; if the integration offers no feedback, the panel should show the result as unconfirmed.
- AV panel → compatible integration and KNX interface.
- Command object → authorized function.
- State object → reading and panel indication.
What to request from the KNX professional
Request an authorized extract of points and model numbers; a full project file may contain private information. If KNX Secure is used, agree on a secure channel with the responsible professional for the necessary data; keep it out of public screenshots and general inquiry forms.
A KNX/IP interface and a KNX/IP router serve different roles. Check whether the platform supports tunneling or routing and how that connection fits the existing topology.
- Point list with command, state, DPT and allowed values.
- Exact interface and AV controller model/firmware documentation.
- A professional authorized to review the project, licenses and changes.
- Retained manual control and a plan for reviewing recovery.
Prepare the integration scope
This guide helps organize a noncritical audiovisual coordination inquiry. ETS programming, commissioning and electrical work are defined with the responsible professional. Access, fire, evacuation and motorized movement are excluded.
