Shelly: identifying the model, API and available state

To evaluate a Shelly device, identify its full model and generation. Similar-looking products can use different protocols and functions. First decide what information you need to display and which action you want to coordinate with the AV system.

Identify model and generation before the API

The Plus Plug US sheet describes power and energy measurement, Wi-Fi connectivity and local or cloud service access. Do not confuse it with Plug US Gen4, Plus Plug S or Wave Plug US. Check variants against the country and electrical requirements as well.

Home Assistant Core 2026.10.3 documentation distinguishes Gen1 using CoIoT from Gen2+ using RPC. The Shelly integration has firmware requirements; check the actual version instead of copying another model’s instructions.

Electrical state does not confirm an image

Conceptual example with fictional data: an interface displays “reported output: active” and “reported power: 18 W.” Those values do not establish projector readiness, the correct input or a visible image. Audiovisual confirmation needs documented feedback from the AV device itself.

The API distinguishes reading functions from functions that change the output. When defining the integration, separate the data you want to display from any action on the equipment and review the requirements for each function.

From electrical data to AV confirmation
  1. Model and firmware → documented API/component.
  2. State data → meaning and freshness in the interface.
  3. AV confirmation → separate feedback from the AV device.

Separate local network, cloud and recovery

A documented local path does not establish whole-room continuity. Record dependencies on Wi-Fi, platform, account, internet and power. Also define who retains manual control and what to review after reconnection.

For an existing unit, identify any configured schedules, scripts or actions before proposing changes. An initial review can use an authorized list; it does not require entering the network or activating those elements.

How to describe the need

Tell us which state you want to know, for which AV equipment and in which country. Add model, firmware and platform if available. We can organize audiovisual options and the coordination required before defining supply or integration.

Load selection and electrical work require a specific review. This guide gives no wiring, energizing, resetting or load-operating instructions. Machinery, motorized movement and critical functions are excluded.
