Room control
Zigbee: coordinator, devices and room coverage
A Zigbee proposal needs more than a device count. Identify the coordinator, platform and expected function of each sensor or button, along with the physical conditions of the space.
A documented example with specific models
SONOFF documents the SNZB-02P temperature and humidity sensor and its use with ZHA. The model’s manual also identifies compatible gateways. For a specific proposal, record the sensor and ZBDongle-E firmware separately and check the entities exposed by the integration.
Distinguish SNZB-02P from SNZB-02D and similarly named products when selecting the sensor. Confirm the unit’s firmware and available entities before finalizing its combination with the coordinator.
| Layer | Documented reference | Project information to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Home Assistant Core 2026.10.3 / ZHA | Actual version and installation type. |
| Coordinator | SONOFF ZBDongle-E / EFR32MG21 | Firmware and Zigbee coordinator role. |
| Device | SONOFF SNZB-02P | Firmware, entities and required reading. |
Coordinator, routers and end devices
The mesh can include Zigbee routers and end devices. Do not automatically count a battery sensor as a repeater. Check the actual role and compatibility by model; the platform also affects which functions are visible.
- Sensor → coordinator or path through a compatible Zigbee router.
- Coordinator → ZHA → reading entity.
- Interface → reported value and criterion for data freshness.
Coverage: define what needs checking
Prepare the intended equipment locations, obstacles, metal surfaces and nearby interference sources, including USB 3.x and Wi-Fi equipment. ZHA documentation explains how location and interference affect the network. A generic distance figure does not establish actual coverage.
For a later authorized test, record location, time, firmware, expected data and received data. Reading freshness must reflect the sensor’s documented behavior; a displayed stored value is not necessarily a recent update.
RSSI indicates signal strength, and LQI indicates link quality. Together with the map, they help interpret the network, but you still need to check that the expected reading arrives. ZHA notes that some links from sleeping devices may be absent from the map without indicating disconnection.
What to share for a review
Preparation does not require pairing, resetting or updating an active installation. This is a noncritical audiovisual scope; a general-purpose sensor is not presented as a safety device.
- Required function and any known models/variants.
- Platform, version and firmware if available.
- Approximate locations and obstacles, keeping private topology out of public material.
- Update frequency the use requires and how stale data will be indicated.
- Retained manual control and the person authorizing future tests.
