Z-Wave: region, controller and exact device variant

To evaluate Z-Wave, start with the country of use and exact equipment variant. A single product name can cover different generations and regions; confirm those details before choosing equipment to buy or integrate.

Documented example: Zooz ZST39 and ZSE44

Zooz’s ZST39 changelog identifies firmware 1.70 based on SDK 7.24.2; version 1.60 added European Long Range support. That does not mean every ZST39 already runs that firmware or that every European device supports Long Range.

The ZSE44 specifications distinguish the original 700-series generation from ZSE44 800LR and its regional variants. When reviewing a sensor from this family, record its region, generation and firmware as well as its name. These details help plan a compatibility check with the controller.

Review mesh and Long Range separately

Long Range requires support from the controller, device and software for the corresponding region. An 800-series label does not establish that full combination. Do not extend limits or distance claims from one variant to another.

Conceptual Z-Wave data path
  1. Correct-region device → documented radio mode.
  2. Controller → Z-Wave server/driver → integration.
  3. Exposed entity → reading and freshness in the AV interface.

What to record for Home Assistant

Reference: Core 2026.10.3 and Z-Wave documentation. In addition to Core, record the Z-Wave JS Server/driver versions and installation method. The documentation distinguishes these components; the Core version alone does not identify the entire chain.

The Z-Wave JS device database helps prepare a review; check required functions against the device’s Command Classes and version. For an initial inquiry, share model numbers and functions; keep DSKs, commissioning QR codes and network keys private.

Prepare the inquiry without changing the network

Describe the AV reading or command you want to coordinate, the country of use and any known models. For an existing installation, identify who maintains its documentation and which manual controls are available.

A later test should record expected and received values and behavior after reconnection. This documentary work requires no resetting, inclusion/exclusion, region changes or firmware updates. Access, fire, machinery and critical functions are excluded.
