Local control and cloud services: dependencies by function

To compare a local solution with a cloud service, start with the function: operating controls inside the space follows a different path from accessing them outside. Record what each function needs and the alternative available to the operator.

Separate two different paths

Home Assistant documentation showing version 2026.10.4 when consulted classifies Shelly as Local Push and identifies RPC for Gen2+ devices. As a model reference, Shelly Plus Plug US has Gen2 documentation and switch:0; its firmware branch reached feature freeze at 1.7.x with critical fixes continuing. Confirm the actual unit firmware and exposed function.

Home Assistant Cloud from Nabu Casa is an optional subscription service for functions such as remote access. Home Assistant documentation states that it is not required to use Home Assistant. Remote access through that service adds an external path; it does not by itself change the interface provided by the local device.

Accounts and subscriptions should match the function

Distinguish the Home Assistant user from the remote service account and subscription. A proposal should identify who administers each access path and whether the service is needed for the intended operation. Confirm included features and commercial terms with the provider before subscribing; do not copy a price or plan from another date or country.

Nabu Casa documentation describes a path from the external browser through its servers to the local instance. Remote use needs those dependencies considered alongside the device. Preparing an inquiry requires no passwords, private links or enabled remote access.

Define a continuity check

First list local readings, local control and remote viewing. For each, record the feedback confirming the result, missing-update indications and alternative control. A later test should observe those functions in an agreed environment; a logo or the Local Push label does not establish continuity.

Electrical readings or a connection indication do not establish that an AV device is ready or displaying an image. Critical functions, safety, access control and motorized movement are outside this proposal. It does not propose interrupting network or power in an active installation.

Conceptual paths with separate dependencies
  1. On-site user → local network → Home Assistant → device integration.
  2. External user → internet/remote service → local instance → the same integration.
  3. Alternative operation → documented manual control and verifiable state.

Start with what you want to do

Describe what needs operating inside the space and what information you want to view remotely. Share label photos, a schedule or a preliminary diagram even if some models or dimensions are missing. GLMedia can help review the AV scope and dependencies before equipment or services are specified.

Questions before choosing

Do I need a cloud subscription to use Home Assistant locally?

Home Assistant documents its cloud service as optional. Review the selected integrations separately: some may depend on external services even when the platform is installed locally.

Does a local integration guarantee operation without internet?

Not for the whole solution. Confirm which functions use only the local network and which need accounts, external servers or other services. Continuity requires checking the complete path.

Are remote access and manual control equivalent alternatives?

Not necessarily. Remote access adds communication dependencies; manual control needs to be defined for the specific function and kept available as required by the project.
