SDI transport over optical fiber

AJA FiDO 12G: prepare an end-to-end SDI fiber link

Move an SDI signal between event locations by checking converters, fiber and format. Start with source, destination and estimated distance before the cable route is final.

Model and scope

This guide covers FiDO-T-12G, transmitting SDI to single-mode LC fiber, paired with FiDO-R-12G, receiving that fiber and outputting SDI. The receiver’s two outputs carry the same signal, not two independent channels.

The FiDO family includes other versions, connectors and capacities. Check full part numbers at both ends. A connector adapter does not establish optical compatibility or format support.

Connections and limits that matter

Signal path
SDI source → FiDO-T-12G → single-mode LC fiber → FiDO-R-12G → SDI destination. Verify suitable power and SDI cabling at both ends as well as the optical link.
Format and color
The units support 12G/6G/3G/HD/SD-SDI as specified. They pass SDI metadata including HDR; that does not scale resolution, change frame rate or perform tone mapping.
Distance and fiber
AJA specifies up to 10 km over single-mode fiber. That product reference is not a guarantee for any reel: losses, splices, patch panels, cleanliness and path condition need verification.

Prepare the system in stages

  1. Record exact models, source/destination formats, connectors, fiber, approximate length and power locations. Identify venue-owned portions and agree on access and a test window.
  2. Check the pair using a known signal, short SDI cables and compatible test fiber. Confirm picture, required audio channels and destination format readout before adding the long route.
  3. Protect the installed route from connector strain and bends outside specification. Trained personnel should inspect and clean using appropriate optical procedures; never look into fiber or connectors or use ordinary magnifiers to search for light.
  4. Test the complete installed route, including panels and final cables, at the event format. Check audio and final destination, record results and rehearse the contingency path. Disconnect and cap ends when appropriate under the safe procedure.

Example event preparation

For a proposed camera position far from the control area, first verify that its output and the switcher input accept the same SDI format. Add the FiDO pair and fiber route without expecting transport to perform a format conversion.

If the destination needs HDMI, include a compatible additional converter and its limits as another stage. Plan the converters, fiber, terminations and power together, and agree on installation and testing of the complete route.

Troubleshooting: find the failing stage

Frequently asked questions

Do the receiver outputs carry different signals?

No. FiDO-R-12G distributes the same channel to both SDI outputs. Two independent signals require a different architecture.

Can I connect an HDMI source?

This pair uses SDI and fiber. An HDMI source needs an additional compatible conversion stage; check its format, audio and restrictions.

Does it convert HDR to SDR?

Passing HDR metadata is not tone mapping. Specify the required processing if the destination needs a different representation or format.

Will any LC FiDO work?

No. Identify version, rate, direction and fiber type. Do not mix single-mode/multimode or different capacities based on connector appearance.

Is 10 km guaranteed on my fiber?

Not automatically. The route and losses must be understood and tested; nominal length or continuity does not prove operation at the required format.

What should I send for an initial inquiry?

Start with connection photos, a sketch showing the source and destination, and an estimated distance. Add models, format and details of any existing fiber if known; include the date and venue when confirmed.
