Camera HDMI: output format, converters and operator monitor
If the recorded file is fine but the camera signal drops at the switcher, trace the live signal path. The recording setting alone does not describe the HDMI output or what the switcher receives after conversion. If you add an operator monitor, also map its signal path and power supply.
Camera dropouts: check the equipment inside the rack too
An SDI label on a rack panel does not establish that the switcher has an SDI input. Trace the wiring and identify the complete chain before attributing a problem to scaling, reclocking or cable length.
Before testing, map camera β converter β cable run β panel β internal converter β switcher. Physically check what enters and leaves each unit, and record its full model. Compare a short connection with the event path while keeping the format unchanged. If the dropout returns when you add a stage, record that segment before changing anything else.
A7 III: check HDMI Resolution separately from the recording format
On the Sony A7 III (ILCE-7M3), the HDMI Settings: HDMI Resolution menu (guide 4-732-947-18(2), p. 334) offers Auto, 2160p/1080p, 1080p and 1080i. Sony says to choose an option compatible with the destination if Auto does not display the picture correctly. Go to MENU > Setup > HDMI Settings > HDMI Resolution and record the setting before changing it. These names apply to the A7 III; they are not an A7 IV setup procedure.
For the comparison, agree on a signal supported by every device in the path and check which format the receiver detects. Record resolution, exact frame rate and scan type separately. If you test 1080i, save a sample with motion and listen to program audio. Restoring a picture does not establish that the motion or delivery format meets your needs.
The manual allows that output selection, but it does not diagnose the rack fault or make the setting a universal preference. The fields and deinterlacing guide covers the editing file; this check follows the live signal.
HXR-NX100: distinguish REC FORMAT, HDMI output and on-screen information
The HXR-NX100 Operating Guide, 4-580-997-11(1), pp. 36, 66β67 and 81, separates REC FORMAT from VIDEO OUT > HDMI. It describes output conversion for 25p recordings on the 50i variant and 24p/30p on the 60i variant. The manual covers both variants and warns that the camera cannot switch between them. Record which you have; do not infer the received frame rate from the file name alone.
To keep camera information on its own screen, check DISPLAY SET > DISPLAY OUTPUT > LCD PANEL. Page 88 distinguishes ALL OUTPUT, which also sends information, zebra, peaking and face-detection frames over HDMI/VIDEO OUT. Overlays may help the operator but be unsuitable for program. Check both views while adjusting focus and opening the controls used during the event.
During the test, save the initial setting, compare a card recording with a capture of the live path, and label both samples. If the file is correct but the switcher signal fails, follow the output and its stages. If only the file fails, check the recording path. This is a proposed test; no NX100 operation or HDMI measurement is reported here.
| What you are checking | Where to check | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Camera file | REC FORMAT and a sample file | Model/variant, codec, resolution, frame rate and file scan type. |
| Camera output | HDMI menu and connected receiver | Selected setting and actual detected signal. |
| Conversion chain | Every unit, panel and rack input | Model, input, output, power and observed change. |
| Program and encoder | Final output and remote reception | Motion, sound, overlays, dropouts and format at that stage. |
A monitor with loop-through output can share HDMI with the switcher
To add an operator monitor, compare three options: a monitor with HDMI loop-through, an HDMI distribution amplifier, or a converter with an additional SDI output. Choose based on compatible inputs, outputs and formats, and check both destinations.
The official product information for the 5-inch F5, under 4K HDMI Input & Loop Output, documents HDMI input and loop-through output. This is the original F5, not the Pro or V2; its product information does not identify firmware. You can prepare the path camera β monitor HDMI IN β HDMI OUT β converter β switcher. Seeing a picture on the monitor still leaves the downstream chain to be checked.
Test that path with the actual equipment before using it for a talk or concert. Enable the monitor's focus and exposure aids and check what reaches program. Off-air, test what happens when the monitor powers down or restarts and when power returns. If it interrupts the switcher, record that and prepare another distribution route. The cited product information does not establish loop-through behavior without power or whether overlays reach that output; the F5 manual still needs checking.
| Path to compare | What it requires | Test still needed |
|---|---|---|
| Camera β monitor with loop-through β converter β switcher | Compatible inputs, outputs and formats on the exact monitor. | Program with monitor aids enabled and during a monitor restart. |
| Converter with two outputs β switcher and SDI monitor | Two documented outputs and a monitor that accepts that SDI signal. | Picture and sound at both destinations; identify the exact converter before testing. |
| HDMI distribution β monitor and converter | A distribution amplifier and destinations that support the intended signal. | Negotiated signal and recovery when each destination connects or powers down. |
NX100: check accessory power requirements before using USB
Before using the NX100 Multi/Micro USB port to power a 5 V accessory, confirm that Sony specifies that use for the exact model. The Sony manual sections USB CONNECT (p. 91) and connectors (p. 114) do not provide a 5 V output specification or available current for that use there. Using the port as a power source requires an applicable Sony specification for the intended accessory.
Identify the exact accessory and prepare the power source specified by its manufacturer. For the original F5, Specifications > General, the product information lists a DC 7β24 V input and power consumption of β€8 W. That range applies to the monitor, not to the NX100 USB port or every Micro Converter. Similar connectors do not make power inputs and outputs interchangeable.
Record the voltage, current or power, polarity, connector and required runtime for each device in the worksheet. Check startup and recovery off-air using the intended power source. Confirm the converter model and its manual before connecting; do not test an unspecified supply by plugging it in.
Document a comparison that lets you restore the initial setup
Use motion, speech and a detailed shot representative of the event. Start with a documented short path and repeat the same shot as you add the monitor, converters and cable run. Change only one variable per comparison: format, stage or power. Record observed dropouts and when they occur, even if one setup restores a picture.
The HDMI and operator monitoring worksheet is blank for you to complete during testing. Keep the initial settings and samples. Recheck the file, program and remote reception if you will be streaming; a working local monitor does not verify the destination of the live stream.
For camera positions, lenses and shot assignments, see the event camera guide. Planning the camera and streaming service also requires setup, rehearsal and operating schedules, as well as the signal diagram.
Frequently asked questions
Does recording at 25p confirm that HDMI outputs 25p?
Check the output menu and the signal detected by the receiver. The file format does not describe the whole path. The NX100 documents output conversion for 25p on its 50i variant; record the variant, HDMI setting and destination reading before choosing a standard.
Should I set every Sony camera to 1080i if the picture drops on an ATEM?
First check what each stage supports, including rack converters. Identify their models and compare a signal documented for the entire path; save a sample with motion and audio.
Where do I select 1080i on the Sony A7 III?
On the ILCE-7M3, go to MENU > Setup > HDMI Settings > HDMI Resolution. Guide 4-732-947-18(2), p. 334, includes 1080i. Save the initial setting and verify receiver compatibility, detected signal and motion. For the A7 IV, check its own menu and manual.
Is an SDI-labeled rack input an SDI input on the switcher?
Follow the cable inside the rack. It may pass through a converter before reaching the switcher. Record each unit's model and input/output; the front-panel label does not describe the complete path.
Can I put a FEELWORLD F5 between the NX100 and the converter?
The original F5 product information documents HDMI IN and loop-through output, so you can prepare that path for comparison. Test formats, program with monitor aids enabled, and power recovery; operation without power and overlays on the monitor's output remain unverified.
How do I keep NX100 peaking and camera information out of program?
Check DISPLAY SET > DISPLAY OUTPUT > LCD PANEL. Page 88 of the manual distinguishes ALL OUTPUT, which sends information and aids to the outputs. Check what the switcher receives and what the operator retains. If you add an external monitor, test its aids too.
Can the NX100 Multi/Micro USB port power my 5 V converter?
Identify the converter and use its documented power supply. Leave camera USB power pending specific confirmation; the connector alone is not enough. Do not use that connection as a power output without an output-voltage and current specification for the exact model.
Is a picture on the operator monitor enough to approve the stream?
Check program, audio and remote reception. The monitor may show the camera while a later stage fails. Record each destination and keep a sample of the final path, including the changes and recovery tests performed. The worksheet contains no completed tests.
