ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K: missing inputs and Black multiview windows

The camera or converter has a picture, but the ATEM does not. First locate where the image disappears: one input, the front LCD or the entire multiview. Those symptoms call for different checks.

Identify the model and where the picture is missing

This guide applies to the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K. The ATEM Live Production Switchers manual, December 2024, page 10 identifies this model and Input 1, shared between HDMI and SDI. The same manual covers Constellation 8K and Broadcast Studio 4K models with different features. Use the Production Studio 4K column and section.

If the TV shows the grid with windows labeled Black, check each window’s assigned source before working on the cameras. A window assigned to Black and an input without a signal may look the same, but they require different checks.

Another receiver shows the signal, but the ATEM input stays black

Read the actual source output: resolution, progressive or interlaced scan, and exact frame rate. Compare it with the ATEM video standard under Settings > General. The manual, pages 16 and 63–64 requires matching formats. A capture device or monitor displaying a picture does not prove that the switcher accepts that format.

Input frame synchronization addresses a source that is not synchronized, as described on page 21. It does not establish resolution or frame-rate conversion: the requirement for matching formats still applies. The Ethernet control cable does not convert the SDI input signal either.

Choose a source and input that you can monitor off air. If the production already has an agreed video standard, first set that source’s output to match, provided its model supports the format. Check the window assigned to that input and look for continuous motion. If the picture appears, record which adjustment restored it. If it stays black, check connector selection and compare the SDI path with a compatible receiver.

Changing the switcher’s video standard affects the system. Page 64 warns that it clears frames loaded into the Media Pool. Have the files ready to reload and agree on a test window before changing that setting. Do not cycle through frame rates during a live presentation.

Operating formatProduction Studio 4K in the December 2024 manualWhat to check at the source
720p50 or 59.94Resolution, progressive scan and frame rate; 60 is not listed as an operating standard.
1080i50 or 59.94Interlaced scan; do not confuse it with 1080p at the same rate.
1080p23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 50 or 59.9430 and 60 are not listed in this column.
2160p23.98, 24, 25 or 29.97Do not apply 2160p50/59.94 from the Broadcast Studio 4K column.

The TV shows the multiview grid, but the windows say Black

Open Settings > Multiview in ATEM Software Control and check the source selected for each window. The manual, page 67 allows sources to be assigned to the eight small windows; page 128 describes Black as an internal source. If the selector is set to Black, choose the input you want to monitor. Check the selector before interpreting the label: input names can also be customized.

Assigning a camera to a window only changes what you monitor. If the window already shows the correct input and remains black, return to the input format, connector and incoming signal. Keep that fault separate from a TV that shows neither borders nor a grid.

If the entire multiview is missing, follow the monitoring path: ATEM Multiview output, cable, selected TV input and the monitor’s support for the received format. See pages 10–11 and 30. For Production Studio 4K, pages 30 and 65 describe HD multiview even when operating in Ultra HD. The 4K model name does not mean the multiview output is UHD.

The front LCD on this model shows the content of an auxiliary output, according to page 10. Identify that auxiliary and its assigned source before using it to judge whether a camera is reaching the switcher. Connecting an input does not automatically put it on the front LCD.

The vMix computer is connected by HDMI, but Input 1 has no picture

Check that HDMI is connected to Input 1 and that HDMI is selected for that input. The 2 M/E Production Studio 4K shares Input 1 with SDI, as confirmed on page 10. Sources Settings, pages 68–69 explains how to distinguish connectors with the same number and choose the connection in the input settings. Connecting both cables does not create two independent sources. Record which one you need.

Compare the computer’s display output format with the ATEM standard. Page 21 requires matching resolution and frame rate. The preview inside vMix does not verify the physical HDMI output. If a local monitor receives that output but the ATEM does not, check Input 1 selection and the format before adding a converter.

Use a documented switcher format: do not treat 60 and 59.94 as interchangeable rates. Computer output menus depend on the GPU and vMix version. Identify both before following instructions for another setup.

The manual warns that an HDCP-protected signal cannot be viewed through the switcher’s HDMI input. Check this when the symptom depends on the content or playback device; it is not the explanation for every black screen. To isolate the path, use your own test pattern without protected content.

Change one variable and watch the correct destination

Before testing, record the source, connector, video standard, multiview assignment and output being monitored. Keep a screenshot of the starting settings. Agree with the program operator which inputs and destinations can be changed: an auxiliary output may be feeding an event screen.

Start with a camera or computer test pattern containing motion and visible edges. Correct one difference and watch that input in its window. Then check the intended path to the screen, recording or stream. Restoring the multiview picture alone does not validate those other outputs.

When comparing a receiver, cable or input, keep the source and format unchanged. Record both the changes that restored the picture and the comparisons that made no difference. A working capture device narrows the search, but does not prove that the entire path to the ATEM is correct.

Record each source and check the connected signal paths

Use the ATEM input and multiview worksheet to record the full format, ports, observation and restored configuration. It lets you compare the documented setup with the result observed during testing.

If the fault starts before the SDI feed to the switcher, see the Studio Camera and Studio Converter guide (Spanish). For a different switcher, use the model-specific AV-HS410 guide (Spanish). The camera HDMI output guide (Spanish) distinguishes a live output signal from a recorded file.

Include your signal diagram and destinations when asking about video processing. That gives us the information needed to plan each source’s format and checks before setup.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I see the camera on a Studio Converter but not on the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K?

Compare the format sent to the ATEM with its operating standard and check the selected physical input. If you use SDI Input 1, confirm that SDI is selected. The converter LCD establishes that there is a picture at that point; the path from there to the switcher still needs checking.

Does Production Studio 4K frame sync convert 1080p60 to 1080p59.94?

Do not assume it does. The manual describes input resynchronization and requires the sources and switcher to use the same standard. The Production Studio 4K column includes 1080p59.94, but not 1080p60 as an operating format. Check the actual output rate and choose a documented format for the whole chain; do not assume 60 Hz tolerance.

Do Black labels in every multiview window mean the cameras have failed?

First check each window’s source selector under Settings > Multiview. Black may be the assigned internal source, and labels can be customized. Select the actual input you want to monitor. If it was already selected and remains black, continue with its format and connector. Renaming the window does not restore a signal.

What should I check if the TV does not even show the multiview grid?

Follow the Multiview output, cable and selected TV input. Check the received format and whether the TV supports it. This Production Studio 4K provides HD multiview even when operating in Ultra HD. Compare a compatible cable or monitor on that path; a missing grid is not explained by the routing of one camera.

Can I use HDMI Input 1 and SDI Input 1 as two separate ATEM inputs?

On the 2 M/E Production Studio 4K they share input 1: you select HDMI or SDI. Check that selection in ATEM Software Control’s input settings and assign the multiview window to Input 1. Record which device is selected before changing it, particularly if either is feeding program.

Should the front ATEM LCD show a camera as soon as I connect it?

This model’s LCD shows the content of an auxiliary output. Check which auxiliary you are viewing and its source, then compare the camera in the multiview window assigned to its input. Changing an auxiliary can affect a connected screen, so coordinate the test with the event operator.

Can I change the ATEM standard during a presentation to find a picture?

Plan that change off air. It changes the system’s video standard, and the manual warns that it clears Media Pool frames. Save the settings and have the media ready to reload. If the event already has an agreed format, start by correcting the source output, provided that model supports the format.

What information do I need to set up PTZOptics with vMix at 1080/60?

Identify the full PTZ model and firmware, output used, actual format, capture device, vMix version and computer. Compare the output rate with the documented formats before planning a test.
