Studio Camera Pro: Studio Converter, 4x12G PWR, and network tests

To prepare multiple Studio Camera 6K Pro units for a conference, broadcast, or production that is set up and dismantled, first draw what connects each camera to control. Studio Converter and 2110 IP Converter 4x12G PWR change the unit count, ports, and return path. The manual edition and installed software also matter.

Identify Studio Camera, Converter, and paths

To choose between one 4x12G PWR and four Studio Converter units, compare connections, functions, versions, and each camera’s path. Check delay in the complete setup without inferring it from the number of units.

Those conversations help choose the questions. This guide’s connections are checked against the manuals and official note; delay and function testing remains proposed for our setup. This page is not backed by GLMedia measurements or tests.

How many units and ports each path needs

Count camera connections before quoting the rack. In the March 2025 Studio Converter manual diagram, each unit receives one camera through the camera port. Its two camera out connectors carry the same signal: they let you send that camera to two destinations, such as a switcher and recorder.

The 2110 IP Converters manual dated September 2026 describes four independent bidirectional conversions on the 4x12G PWR. Each 10G port corresponds to a path; the four 12G-SDI outputs let you send the received signals to four ATEM inputs. Write down the converter port and switcher input: their numbers may differ.

On a direct link, connect the endpoints specified by the manufacturer. If you insert a switch, also review ST 2110 link, NMOS, and reception. The RJ-45 marked 1G ETHERNET on the 4x12G PWR serves configuration and can receive PTP; the described video connections are the four 10G ports. Do not use that 1G port instead of a camera connection.

Versions: why a 2024 answer is not enough to decide

Read the Studio Camera 6K Pro Software field in setup and record each unit’s version. Also record Studio Converter or 4x12G PWR and the full ATEM model. The same commercial name does not demonstrate that two units have the same software.

The official Blackmagic Camera Setup 9.4 Beta notes, updated on April 6, 2025, include Studio Camera 6K Pro and Studio Converter among the units gaining ST 2110. For that software, the manufacturer requires also updating Studio Converter if connected over ST 2110. The support entry also covers 4x12G PWR.

Compare the release notes for the version you will use, its models, and both link endpoints. If proposing an update, reserve time outside production to document settings and test the entire path.

PGM, tally, and talkback: trace the signal to the operator

With Studio Converter, the manual path is camera out to the ATEM SDI input and the ATEM program output to return 1. View cam and return 1 on the LCD. Then hold PGM on the Studio Camera: the return signal should appear, distinct from the local image.

With 4x12G PWR, the four SDI OUT connections go to the switcher and its program output enters PGM IN. The startup described on pp. 16–18 lets you check IN 1–4 for received signals and OUT 1–4 for the return sent. When used as four independent converters, OUT displays the corresponding SDI input converted to IP. Record mode and cabling to interpret the correct button.

Then check ATEM Camera ID against the actual switcher input. Take each camera to program off-air and observe its tally; test an agreed image adjustment on just one camera and verify that another does not change. A visible return does not by itself confirm control or ID.

The Studio Cameras manual places talkback on SDI channels 15 and 16 and describes checking with headphones at the camera and an ATEM with talkback. Test both directions. If a voice is missing, record where it is heard before changing levels or routing. The exact switcher and any external intercom need their own check; also consult camera direction and intercom.

The March 2025 manual describes Studio Converter return 2 to camera HDMI for another source. We do not automatically transfer that function to 4x12G PWR or assume the same behavior has been verified after switching to ST 2110. If the event needs a teleprompter or second return, make it an explicit test requirement.

To test the second return, send a program image to return 1 and a different, easily recognizable image to return 2. Check RET 2 on Studio Converter, then the monitor connected to camera HDMI. If RET 2 appears on the converter but not on HDMI, record both points and versions: the interruption still needs locating. This is a proposed test; behavior after switching to ST 2110 was not confirmed in the conversations read.

Cable, power, and delay: which test to prepare

For Studio Converter, the manufacturer supports CAT 6 and recommends well-shielded CAT 6A S/FTP for long runs. The 4x12G PWR startup uses CAT6A; its ports section recommends CAT 6A Class E or F for long runs. Verify the installed cable’s category, shielding, and termination.

Check power-on, PoE state, and image reception separately. For Studio Converter, the manual gives approximately 20–30 seconds to establish video after power-on. That startup time is not operating signal delay or a measurement for 4x12G PWR.

We suggest comparing one path at a time with the same camera, format, and final monitor. Film a visible action and its monitor image in the same frame, or a counter and its reproduction. Record the frame difference and recording frame rate; repeat the reading to record the observed range. This method estimates the entire path and depends on the instrument, monitor, and framing.

If you also change the switcher, scaling, or monitor, you can no longer attribute the entire difference to the converter. Preserve the rest of the path and record audio, PGM, tally, control, and voice state. A satisfactory delay reading still leaves those functions to check.

Record the path before the next setup

Use the Studio Camera and converter worksheet to record versions, ports, and observations. It is blank: each result must come from a test you actually perform. If a function was not tested, write pending.

For a production that is dismantled, save the plan with ATEM input numbers, Camera ID, each camera’s cable, and intended return. On reassembly, check that matching before sending a signal to program. The camera planning and continuity test guides help organize leads and backups.

To define conversion, distribution, and return, connect that information with GLMedia’s video processing service. Required functions and pending tests must remain visible in the technical proposal.

No converters found: check the utility and model before updating

Check Camera Setup detection and ATEM video reception separately after each change.

Blackmagic Studio Converter appears among the units in Blackmagic Camera Setup 9.4 Beta. The Studio Cameras manual places its update USB on the front, p. 106. The 2110 IP Converter 4x12G PWR, however, is configured with Blackmagic Converters Setup, p. 99 of its manual. Select the utility by full model before interpreting an empty list as a fault.

We suggest first checking over USB outside production with a data-capable cable. Record whether the correct utility shows the model, connection type, and internal version. If it still does not appear, try a different USB segment and record the result; do not change firmware and cable in the same attempt. An image on the LCD and absence from a utility are different observations.

We preserve those numbers as data from the inquiry. The utility number and internal number need not match to evaluate the link: check whether the package includes the model and which version the unit reports.

The image disappears when Control connects to the network

If video disappears when connecting Control to the network switch, separate that change from the signal path. Preserve the previous state and check the port’s function in the installed version before reconnecting it.

Before updating or restoring factory settings, identify camera, converter, versions, and configuration, and compare the official package notes. Keep a backup and check the link off program.

The March 2025 manual, p. 71, describes program for reference from an ATEM and external for analog reference through Studio Converter. Page 107 says Control is not enabled in that edition. It predates 9.4 Beta: check that beta’s documentation before assigning it the same functions or transferring program to an ST 2110 path.

To check a setup with that symptom, first photograph the working path, format, and available reference, Master, PTP Lock, and Receiver states. During a rehearsal break, connect only the Control segment to the intended network and record what changes first and when video drops. If removing that segment restores the signal, you have a repeatable association; the cause still needs identification using switch and equipment configuration.

If your edition does not show one of those fields, record which is missing. The link, NMOS, and reception guide explains which data to review when the path actually includes an ST 2110 network. Do not confuse Studio Converter Control with 1G ETHERNET on 4x12G PWR: equivalent behavior was not verified here.

Managing the converter, finding cameras, and receiving tally are separate checks

It cannot find the cameras from that network and receives neither tally nor call. A reply asks about program return and camera numbers; there is no subsequent result confirming that solution.

To administer 4x12G PWR over Ethernet, its manual p. 99 instructs first connecting by USB and enabling allow utility administration as via USB and Ethernet, then save. That enables administration of that converter. That section does not document its 1G port making all cameras on the 10G ports accessible by IP.

Page 97 also documents that 1G can receive a PTP grandmaster; p. 98 establishes that this clock takes priority over the one derived from PGM IN. If you add that connection, also record which reference becomes active. This behavior is documented for 4x12G PWR; it does not prove the cause of image loss in the other case, which uses Studio Converter.

Separate the checks: first image and return on the path already described; then identification of each unit in its utility; finally tally, call, and image control from the switcher. If the converter appears but the camera does not, do not address it by changing Camera ID: that ID links tally to the ATEM input and does not replace network data.

If you want to copy clips, the Studio Cameras manual pp. 120 and 124 describes separate permissions for FTP, SMB, and Web Media Manager. To configure Network Access, p. 124 specifies USB. Test the intended access without deleting files and record the camera and protocol. Administering a converter over the network does not demonstrate that you can open files on a camera connected to it.

Network test and precautions before resetting equipment

The Studio Cameras manual p. 71 warns that changing Reference Source may briefly interrupt output; do it during preparation, never with that camera on program.

Factory reset was part of Blackmagic Design’s recommendation for the 9.4 Beta case, not a demonstrated repair of Control access. The manual p. 123 also warns that resetting invalidates the camera certificate. If that access uses a signed certificate, plan for regeneration and signing before relying on it for the event.

The Studio Camera reference and network worksheet lets you record direct link, network addition, detection, and second return. The fields are blank. The two inquiries provide no final network or return 2 over ST 2110 test; mark each untested function as pending.

Frequently asked questions

Is one Studio Converter enough for four Studio Camera 6K Pro units?

In the March 2025 manual diagram, each Studio Converter connects one camera. Four cameras need four units. A unit’s two camera out connectors repeat that camera’s signal; they do not add inputs. The 4x12G PWR offers four independent paths: also verify versions, returns, and required functions before choosing it.

Can Studio Camera 6K Pro connect to 4x12G PWR over ST 2110?

The official Camera 9.4 Beta documentation adds ST 2110 for Studio Camera 6K Pro, and the support entry covers 4x12G PWR. Record actual versions and compare the notes for the selected edition; do not transfer functions between versions without checking their scope.

Do I also need to update Studio Converter to use Camera 9.4 Beta over ST 2110?

Yes: that version’s note requires Studio Converter to have that software too for ST 2110 connection with the updated camera. Preserve the information with its version scope.

Where do I connect ATEM program to return it to the cameras?

On Studio Converter it goes to return 1; on 4x12G PWR it goes to PGM IN in the manual’s startup path. First check return on the converter LCD, then at the camera using PGM. If it appears on the former but not the camera, trace the return segment and link configuration. Tally, control, and voice are checked separately.

Can I use the 1G ETHERNET port on 4x12G PWR to connect a camera?

The manual assigns that port to configuration and PTP clock reception. The four video connections are the 10G 2110 IP WITH POWER ports. Review the connector label and path; if you need a network switch, check its configuration and reception in the ST 2110 link guide.

Does a return image demonstrate that tally and talkback work?

It is not enough. After viewing PGM, check ATEM Camera ID against the actual input, take that camera to program during rehearsal, and observe its tally. Test control on one camera and voice in both directions with the planned headphones. Record each result; one function may arrive while another still fails.

Does 4x12G PWR also replace Studio Converter return 2 and teleprompter?

The March 2025 manual describes Studio Converter return 2 to camera HDMI; the 4x12G PWR startup describes common PGM. To compare, use distinct sources on return 1 and return 2, view RET 2 on the converter, then the HDMI destination. Record where each image appears and with which versions. This test remains pending: we do not confirm the second return over ST 2110 or its equivalence when changing converters.

How much delay does each converter add in a live production?

We suggest measuring each path with the same camera, format, and monitor, recording the method, and repeating to obtain a range. The 20–30 seconds specified to establish video when Studio Converter powers on is startup time; it does not answer how much an image is delayed during operation.

Why does Blackmagic Converters show no converters found with Studio Converter?

First check model and utility. Blackmagic Studio Converter appears in Camera Setup 9.4 Beta; 4x12G PWR uses Blackmagic Converters Setup. We suggest verifying USB detection in the utility that includes the model and recording the result before updating.

Do Camera Setup 9.4 and Studio Converter internal version 2.1 mean the update failed?

The utility and internal version are different data; the difference alone does not demonstrate a fault. Record both, compare the model with the package notes, and check the link. The 9.4 Beta note requires also updating Studio Converter with that build for ST 2110.

What should I check if Studio Camera 4K Pro loses the image when connecting Studio Converter Control to the network?

Repeat the comparison only during rehearsal: save the working direct-link state and add only the Control connection to the intended network. Record the first change in available reference, Receiver, or PTP Lock, and where the image is lost. If repeatable, preserve evidence and network configuration to investigate the cause.

Should I use program or External 2110 when configuring Camera 9.4 Beta?

Do not mix editions. Record your edition’s label and compare its documentation before changing it. Keep testing outside production: the manual warns that changing reference may interrupt output.

Does the 1G port on 4x12G PWR let me find all Studio Camera 4K Pro G2 units connected to its 10G ports?

The checked manual documents converter administration and PTP reception through 1G without promising an IP access bridge to each camera in that section. Check separately which unit Camera Setup sees and which Converters Setup sees; then test return, tally, and control. An empty camera list is not corrected by ATEM Camera ID alone.

Should I factory reset to recover video or network access?

Not as a first attempt without a record. Document settings and versions before repeating them. The manual p. 123 warns that reset invalidates the camera certificate; if using a signed one, prepare regeneration and signing. Do it during preparation with a backup path planned.
