Event power planning
Harmonics and neutral: questions for electronic loads
Even load allocation does not establish zero neutral current. In three-phase systems with a neutral, some harmonic components can add and require specific review.
Information that makes analysis useful
- Documented system and actual electronic-load grouping, power-supply models and operating conditions.
- Manufacturer harmonic data, if available, with the voltage and load level to which it applies.
- Available phase/neutral current and voltage/current distortion records, including point, time, instrument and settings. A professional plans measurements.
Distinguish balance, power factor and distortion
These are related but different quantities. A PFC label or isolated power-factor value does not establish the assembly’s current spectrum. A distortion figure without identifying voltage or current and how it was obtained is not a sufficient basis for comparison.
Ask the professional to review the neutral, protective devices and distribution thermal conditions. Conductor sizes, derating factors and any filters must be determined through a study of the actual installation.
Compare responses to a confirmed problem
The provider may review equipment selection, distribution or engineered mitigation according to the study. Do not add filters or capacitors by trial and error or reduce the neutral based on assumed cancellation.
Planning questions
Do equal phase amperes mean zero neutral current?
Not necessarily with nonlinear loads. Waveform and harmonic components matter alongside balance.
Do all LED walls have the same harmonics?
Do not assume so. Supply model, load and conditions matter; request exact assembly documentation.
Is one THD value enough to select a filter?
No. Identify the quantity, point and scenario, then request system analysis and mitigation objectives before selecting equipment.
