Optical transport and troubleshooting
Art-Net and sACN over fiber: document the control network
Fiber can connect switches in a lighting network. Correct control delivery also requires documented protocols, universes and destinations: an optical link does not automatically translate Art-Net, sACN and DMX.
Follow data from console to node
Record console and version, network interface, switch, fiber uplink, receiving node and assigned DMX output. Record the universe as displayed at both ends and its mapping; do not assume the same numbering convention.
Review traffic distribution
Identify unicast, multicast or broadcast destinations from the actual protocol and configuration. The cited Eos manual shows different options for sACN and Art-Net; do not transfer its settings to other consoles. Coordinate VLANs, filtering and the querier role with the administrator for multicast.
Check DMX output and simultaneous sources
Record sources that can send to the same universe and their priorities or merge rules for the equipment. Compare a dedicated network with a documented shared network. Agree with the lighting lead on the node and DMX output to observe during the test. Make universe changes outside the live show.
Information for a link review
| Item | What to record | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Console, version, interface and protocol | Identify the authorized source |
| Distribution | Universes, destinations, VLANs and uplinks | Check mapping and traffic delivery |
| Handoff | Node, output and expected loss behavior | Verify the final function with lighting |
Before approaching an optical connection
Do not look into optical ports or fiber ends, even when no light is visible. Inspection, cleaning and measurement require the manufacturer’s tools and procedures. If the assembly is hybrid and also carries power, identify the complete system and arrange work with qualified personnel.
Technical questions
Does reaching a node’s web page prove DMX output?
No. Management access and lighting-level data are separate checks.
Does an active fiber LED prove all universes are passing?
No. Verify reception and assignment of the intended universes.
Should I enable IGMP on every switch?
It depends on the topology, multicast traffic and switch capabilities. Review those details and the manufacturer’s guidance before choosing settings.
