Signal cabling
HDBaseT cable: plan the run from the extender requirements
Do not specify an HDBaseT cable as just “Cat 6.” Identify the transmitter, receiver, planned signal, and entire route first. This guide prepares physical cabling; active transport selection and configuration need a separate review.
Start with both endpoint manuals
Kramer’s PT-580T/TP-580T/TP-580R Rev.4 manual recommends shielded twisted pair and relates reach to resolution, source, and display. That guidance applies to those models, not a universal extender distance.
- Record each endpoint’s model, revision, and HDBaseT port. An RJ45 connector does not establish a LAN connection.
- Find the recommended cable, category, construction, and termination conditions in the applicable documentation.
- Confirm the actual assembly’s functions and power transport. Port shape does not establish PoE, PoH, or switch compatibility.
Include every part of the physical channel
If the extender documentation calls for a direct run, review any added panels or couplers before including them. A category marking on one piece does not verify the others. Compare a direct route with any sectional path the documentation allows.
| Part | Required record | Review |
|---|---|---|
| Main run | Manufacturer, part number, length, and construction | Endpoint pair’s requirements |
| Patch leads and couplers | Part number and quantity for every piece | Whether allowed, and total length |
| Ends | Connectors, shielding, and external condition | Cable, connector, and port compatibility |
Prepare and document the run
Do not alter shields, grounds, or power to resolve a fault. If documentation requires a particular assembly or termination, request a suitable assembly and technical review.
- Measure the approved route with rises, drops, and slack; mark crossings and protection.
- Read bend limits and use conditions for the exact cable. Check suitability for the event’s handling and environment.
- Label both ends with the same ID and HDBaseT destination. Keep it distinct from other systems’ LAN cabling.
- Arrange a cable check using a compatible tool and procedure. Checks must account for any power present at the ports.
- Arrange a complete-link signal check with the planned devices and format. Record sections, accessories, and result.
Setup questions
Can I use the network cable already installed?
Collect its part number, route, patch points, and measurement results if available. Check it against the extender’s requirements; continuity or operation with another service is insufficient.
Does Cat 6A guarantee the video will work?
Not by itself. Review the complete channel, connectors, endpoints, and intended signal. A cabling check and a functional video check answer different questions.
Can I connect the HDBaseT port to any switch?
Do not rely on resemblance to Ethernet. Identify the port’s role and follow the documented equipment layout. Request a review if the connection is unclear.
