RJ45 and etherCON: identify the connector, cable, and port
At an event, RJ45-ended cables may serve different systems. An etherCON housing provides mechanical protection, but does not identify the protocol or establish that every variant fits. Separate those decisions before preparing the patch.
Record three separate identities
Compare a conventional RJ45 assembly with a protected one against the device and setup conditions. Do not remove housings, latches, or seals to make a part fit.
| Identity | Record | Does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Connector | Plug and receptacle models; latch and accessories | Protocol or compatibility with the entire family |
| Cable | Part number, category, construction, and length | Performance of the complete assembled channel |
| Port | Device, label, and documented role | Equivalence to another similarly shaped socket |
Some etherCON variants do not mate
Neutrik documents that the NE8FDY-C6 panel connector does not accept NE8MX6, despite the latter’s CAT6A rating. The NE8FDY-C6 lists NE8MC6-MO, NKE6S-*, and generic RJ45 as accepted mates. Check complete part numbers, suffixes, and use conditions before choosing the assembly.
- These are documented examples, not a stock list or a recommendation for every device.
- Cable category and connector mechanical series are separate details. “Cat 6” does not identify a specific housing.
- If the equipment documentation does not identify the receptacle, request that information before specifying the cable. Never force a mating test.
Prepare the assembly for its actual destination
A metal housing alone does not establish shield continuity, environmental protection, or power capability. Verify these for the assembly and its mating connector. Do not modify grounds or shields to fix a connection issue.
- Record device and port at both ends, function, and assembled cable part number.
- Check mechanical compatibility in connector and equipment documentation. Also verify required cable, shielding, and installation conditions.
- Measure the route with joints and slack; confirm protection and strain relief.
- Label the ID and function at both ends to distinguish LAN, dedicated links, and other uses.
- Check the assembly with an appropriate procedure, then with the intended system. Save the result and patch revision.
Setup questions
Does etherCON make any cable Cat 6A?
No. The housing does not automatically upgrade the cable, terminations, or other components. Record and verify each part of the channel.
Can I connect that cable to the venue network?
Only after confirming that both ports serve the intended Ethernet connection and coordinating it. RJ45 or etherCON may also appear on dedicated links that cannot be connected to a LAN based on resemblance.
Why might a Cat 6A variant not fit?
Category alone does not define the mechanical interface. Compare plug and receptacle part numbers with the manufacturer’s table; NE8FDY-C6 and NE8MX6 illustrate why the etherCON name is insufficient.
