Optical transport and troubleshooting
Dante over fiber: plan network transport
Fiber extends the Ethernet network Dante uses; it does not by itself convert an audio signal to Dante. This guide focuses on transport between event locations.
Identify the network to connect
Record Dante devices, switches, optical uplinks, speeds and channel counts with sample rates. Dante Support specifies switches with fiber connectivity for carrying Dante over fiber. Each optic must be supported by its switch.
Document primary and secondary separately
Confirm device redundancy support and the correct port mode. Map both networks and their dependencies: switches, fibers, shared trunk and power. Keep the primary and secondary networks separate; connect the computer using the control-access arrangement documented for the devices.
Prepare a service check
Save port maps and network configuration before proposing changes. Record link status, errors and audio reception during an agreed window. Compare dedicated and shared networks against traffic and Dante requirements; use the relevant troubleshooting guide for clocking, subscriptions or audio latency.
Information for a link review
| Item | What to record | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Uplink | Switch, port, optic, fiber and speed | Review section support and capacity |
| Networks | Primary/secondary, mode and shared components | Define backup coverage |
| Service | Channels, sample rates, traffic and observed audio | Distinguish connectivity from verified audio |
Before approaching an optical connection
Do not look into optical ports or fiber ends, even when no light is visible. Inspection, cleaning and measurement require the manufacturer’s tools and procedures. If the assembly is hybrid and also carries power, identify the complete system and arrange work with qualified personnel.
Technical questions
Can an SDI fiber converter carry Dante?
It is not equivalent. Select Ethernet transport suitable for the Dante equipment.
Do two strands in one cable remove cable-cut risk?
No: they share the cable and possibly the route. Record that dependency.
Does a device missing from Dante Controller prove an optical fault?
No. Review the control interface, network and device mode as well as the link. Visibility and audio require their own checks.
