Edison and twist-lock: request the complete designation
Edison and twist-lock help start a conversation, but do not fully define the accessory required. Record the complete code and marked ratings before comparing the two ends of a cable.
What to identify
As catalog examples, Leviton identifies 515PV as 5-15P, 15 A, 125 V; 2311 as L5-20P, 20 A, 125 V; and 2321 as L6-20, 20 A, 250 V. These describe components, not measurements of the actual supply.
Keep letters, numbers, and suffixes exactly as marked. Three contacts or a twist-lock description do not establish equivalence.
Prepare your inquiry
- Brand, part number, and full designation for each end, with readable photos and markings.
- Plug, receptacle, or equipment-inlet identification according to its documentation.
- Equipment and venue service supply data, without inferring them from connector shape.
- Exterior cable, insulation, and housing condition; remove visibly damaged items from use for review.
Limit this review to external identification of equipment taken out of service and secured de-energized by competent personnel. Do not open enclosures or handle contacts. Damage, a burning smell, or a protective-device trip calls for stopping use and requesting review; do not repeatedly reset it.
Alternatives to compare
Compare documented cables that match the equipment and supply. Locking retention may change cable handling, but does not increase available current or correct voltage.
For a transition, provide both ends’ details and request a documented solution. Do not change blades or remove grounding to make a connection fit.
Technical questions
Is Edison a sufficient quote description?
Request the full designation. An informal name does not replace part reference, ratings, or product use conditions.
Do L5-20 and L6-20 differ only in shape?
No. The cited official examples have different voltage ratings. Review that difference against supply and load; do not interchange them based on resemblance.
Does a twist-lock eliminate cable-pull concerns?
No. Connector retention does not replace a protected route or specified strain relief. Record access and areas exposed to movement.
Can any adapter connect two formats?
Do not define it by fit. Obtain adapter, equipment, supply, and protection documentation; changing format does not transform voltage.
Location and supply
Include the country, city, and venue. For the United States, request service details from the venue; for Argentina, obtain documentation for the local supply. Do not transfer voltage assumptions, color conventions, or requirements between countries. Installation review and commissioning require competent personnel under the applicable jurisdiction.

Connector references help identify a family. A component’s rating does not establish the rating of the complete distribution unit.
