OS2 and OM3/OM4: choose fiber from the transceivers
OS2 is single-mode fiber; OM3 and OM4 are multimode. Distance or color alone cannot choose between them. Start with the optical modules and supported equipment at both ends.
Record each module’s part number
For example, Cisco documents SFP-10G-SR for multimode and SFP-10G-LR for single-mode fiber. This does not make SR and LR a compatible pair or approve modules for another manufacturer. Verify each part number, revision, host device, required fiber, and endpoint documentation.
- Request connector, polish, fiber count, and endpoint mapping.
- Include reel, patch leads, panels, and adapters in the record.
- Jacket or connector color is a clue; labels and data sheets identify the reference.
Compare complete solutions
If modules have not been selected, discuss compatible fiber-and-transceiver systems rather than a blind cable swap. OM4 does not turn single-mode optics into multimode. Published reach depends on assembly conditions and optical budget; the OS2 name does not establish it.
- Collect label and port photos without looking into optical ends.
- Measure the approved route and record every intermediate connection.
- Review bend, pulling, and environment limits for the exact cable.
- Arrange inspection, cleaning, and measurement with compatible tools and trained personnel. Never look into ports or ends, even when no light is visible.
- Keep the record and a functional check of the planned link; preparation is not a completed measurement.
Setup questions
Can I mix OS2 and OM3 using an adapter?
A mechanical adapter does not change fiber type or device optics. Review an end-to-end compatible solution before connecting.
Can a different patch lead affect a correct reel?
Yes. It can introduce incompatibility. The patch lead must also meet fiber type, connector, polish, mapping, and assembly requirements.
Are two modules with the same connector compatible?
Not necessarily. Check each part number and optical function. Single-fiber bidirectional systems may require complementary pairs; do not assume two identical modules provide the link.
