Portable generation

Portable generator noise: compare measurement conditions

To interpret a dB(A) figure, check its measurement conditions. For a presentation or recording, audience and microphone positions and sound-reflecting surfaces also matter.

Decibels need context

Yamaha’s global EF2200iS 220 V/60 Hz page lists 57 dBA at 7 m and quarter load with economy mode on, and 65 dBA at 7 m and rated load. These are that variant’s test conditions, not placement clearances.

What to send for a power review

Planned location and operation

Run a fuel-powered generator outdoors, away from openings, with exhaust directed away from buildings and people. An enclosed tent, garage or equipment room is unsuitable, even with ventilation. An automatic carbon monoxide (CO) shutoff does not permit indoor use.

In the United States, CPSC recommends at least 20 ft (about 6.1 m) from buildings. Also check the manual, air intakes, audience areas and venue rules before choosing a location. In Argentina, check the local equipment version and the jurisdiction’s and venue’s requirements.

Plan for a dry surface and rain protection as specified in the manual, without enclosing the exhaust. Shut down and let the generator cool before refueling. If the site cannot support these conditions or the required breaks, compare another power source.

Never feed building wiring through a wall outlet. If the project requires a transfer system, request an authorized system and review by qualified personnel. That review must cover protection, grounding, neutral configuration and distribution; do not use improvised adapters.

Frequently asked questions

Is 52 dBA always better than 57 dBA?

Comparison requires equivalent conditions. An “as low as” figure may use another load or distance.

Does 7 m establish safe separation?

No. It is an acoustic condition; location and exhaust require a separate review.

How can I assess whether noise will affect the microphones?

Review the site, microphone positions and intended use. An acoustic test with the proposed setup can be arranged to assess noise before the event.
