Reading markings
IEC 60309: reading a connector’s markings
“Industrial plug” is not enough to request a cable or outlet. An organized record of exterior markings helps locate the correct variant before comparing the supply and equipment.
What to identify
Record brand and full part number, then each field with its unit: current, voltage or range, frequency, poles, and clock position where marked. Keep these separate from cable and distro specifications.
MENNEKES identifies clock position and color as family coding details. Use them with the rest of the identification; do not reconstruct a part number from a dark photo or an image’s apparent orientation.
Prepare your inquiry
- Readable photos of brand, part number, electrical markings, and pole designation, without handling contacts.
- Exact clock-position and IP markings where present. Flag absent or unreadable fields.
- Reference and photos for the intended other end, supply information, and equipment requirements.
- Official datasheet and instructions for the exact part, region of use, and intended environmental conditions.
Limit this review to external identification of equipment taken out of service and secured de-energized by competent personnel. Do not open enclosures or handle contacts. Damage, a burning smell, or a protective-device trip calls for stopping use and requesting review; do not repeatedly reset it.
Alternatives to compare
Compare complete references rather than color or the current printed on one connector. Poles, voltage, frequency, and coding can change the required variant.
If the venue system does not match, review another supply solution with the provider. Do not cut keys, force a connection, or omit conductors to make it fit.
Technical questions
What does a clock position mean?
It is a coding detail linked by the manufacturer to the protective contact arrangement and variant. Record the marking and check the exact catalog; do not turn it into wiring instructions.
Does the printed current tell me how much I can draw at the event?
It describes a connector characteristic, not the installation’s available capacity. Documented assembly, protection, cabling, and supply also matter.
Does an IP rating apply under every condition?
Review the declared conditions for that reference and operating state, including covers or mating where applicable. One marking does not establish outdoor suitability for the entire assembly.
Can I copy a similar catalog item’s name?
Look for the exact reference. If missing, provide photos and leave the variant unresolved; do not fill in codes or ratings by resemblance.
Location and supply
Include the country, city, and venue. For the United States, request service details from the venue; for Argentina, obtain documentation for the local supply. Do not transfer voltage assumptions, color conventions, or requirements between countries. Installation review and commissioning require competent personnel under the applicable jurisdiction.
