AV rack PDU: outlets, functions, and access
A PDU organizes distribution to rack equipment. Define required outlets and functions before choosing a format or accessories.
What to identify
Record documented model, input, outputs, protection, and mounting. Do not assume backup power, regulation, surge protection, or remote control simply from the PDU label.
As a specific example, the APC AP9562/63/64 manual limits those units to indoor use and prohibits extensions or adapters. Read the instructions for the proposed reference rather than generalizing from a power-strip appearance.
Prepare your inquiry
- Processors, networking, playback, and other equipment, with nameplate supply data.
- Connector count and type per device, input locations, and space for access and cabling.
- Supply data and required functions: distribution, metering, sequencing, or continuity during an outage.
Limit this review to external identification of equipment taken out of service and secured de-energized by competent personnel. Do not open enclosures or handle contacts. Damage, a burning smell, or a protective-device trip calls for stopping use and requesting review; do not repeatedly reset it.
Alternatives to compare
Compare a basic PDU with solutions documenting the additional functions needed. If backup runtime is required, request a UPS and compatibility review as part of the assembly; do not infer it from the PDU.
Technical questions
Do more outlets allow more load?
They add connection points. Total load and input and protection limits require document review.
Can I connect one PDU to another to reach every device?
Do not propose that for convenience. Review model and supply restrictions; the cited APC example prohibits extensions and adapters.
Can the rack operate with its covers closed?
Review access and ventilation against rack and equipment manuals. Do not cover ventilation or assume the transport configuration is the operating configuration.
Location and supply
Include the country, city, and venue. For the United States, request service details from the venue; for Argentina, obtain documentation for the local supply. Do not transfer voltage assumptions, color conventions, or requirements between countries. Installation review and commissioning require competent personnel under the applicable jurisdiction.
