NovaStar VX4S
NovaStar VX4S: control connection, monitoring and input backup
What to check when software cannot find the VX4S, a monitor stays black or the backup input shows the wrong content. How to retain the LED configuration.
Model and version
This guide covers the VX4S using the combined VX4S/VX4 manual, NS160110080. The two models have different connector layouts: check the equipment and port labels. It does not cover the VX4S-N or VX400s. Catalog reference quantity: 12 units; confirm location, configuration and availability for the event date.
Prepare the check
Before making changes, identify the unit, active input and complete path to the receiving cards. Keep the working configuration and arrange a test window: input changes, test patterns or restarts may interrupt the event image.
Operating questions
Why does the computer not detect the VX4S over USB?
Use the USB type B control port. Do not connect the type A ports directly to the computer. If the unit does not appear in the software, check the cable and selected port first; try a known working data cable before changing LED parameters.
For network control, identify the control ETHERNET port rather than LED Out. Check Communication Settings and the IP address without changing the map. Test one control path at a time: if USB works but network control does not, investigate addressing and the network connection. If neither works, note software versions and error messages for support; a factory reset is not the first step.
The LED wall has an image but the DVI monitor does not. Has the output failed?
First check that the monitor uses a monitoring output, not DVI LOOP. On this unit, Output Resolution sets the monitoring output format. It does not change the physical pixel dimensions of the LED wall. Compare the selected format with the formats supported by the monitor.
With the wall working, try another cable and a compatible monitor during setup. If one monitor works and another does not, the comparison points toward format, cable or monitor issues without proving that the processor has failed. If the wall also has no image, start with the active input and signal path; do not rebuild the LED map solely to fix an auxiliary monitor.
Does Inputs Backup also cover a processor failure?
Inputs Backup assigns an alternative input for a signal failure; Redundancy concerns the primary or backup role of the controller. These are different functions. A second computer connected to the same VX4S does not replace a second controller if that unit fails.
Prepare the alternative source with the right content and format. During rehearsal, remove the main input signal and observe the image, switching delay and steps needed to resume operation. Record what happens when the source returns as well. Do not assume an invisible transition: test the actual input combination and firmware before the event.
Does saving a preset also preserve the receiving-card configuration?
The manual distinguishes Presettings from Save to RV Card. To retain receiving-card settings after power loss, check the specific receiving-card save operation. Before loading an RCFG file, confirm that it matches the cabinet and its configuration; a plausible filename is not enough.
Keep an identified copy of the working configuration. After adjusting and saving, check identification, order and content across the whole wall; test persistence with a controlled restart during setup only, never during a live feed. If the result changes, restore the validated configuration and investigate the save operation before adding further adjustments.
Symptom and next check
| Symptom | Check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No USB detection | Type B port and data cable | If another cable works, investigate the link before changing the map. |
| Wall works, monitor black | Selected output and Output Resolution | Compare with a monitor that accepts the format. |
| Backup lacks useful content | Alternative source and Inputs Backup assignment | Rehearse loss and return; watch content and switching time. |
| Configuration changes after restart | Correct file and Save to RV Card | Restore the validated configuration and retest outside live operation. |
