Proposed test, scope and alternatives
This page covers the original eight-universe NX1, now listed as Legacy by the manufacturer. NX1-16 is a separate variant. The current matrix calls NX1 licensing Onyx 8; earlier material uses Essential. Compare actual model and capacity rather than license branding alone.
It provides four configurable DMX/RDM ports and a Gigabit network port. Eight universes do not mean eight physical connectors. Local DMX assigns port direction and universe; this menu replaced USB2DMX beginning with ONYX 4.8.
For a changing show, decide which looks need playbacks, programming and an operator. If the design exceeds the unit’s capacity, assess another console or a documented higher-capacity ONYX system. Do not promise expansion by adding device licenses together.
- Record model, ONYX/OS release and displayed capacity. Save a copy with fixture profiles and dependencies before transfer.
- Map show universes to local ports and Art-Net/sACN destinations. Propose safe-level branch tests with matching fixture mode and address.
- Check cues, masters and recovery on the intended unit. Library updates can change fixture behavior; rehearse a copy and preserve the approved version before modifying the system.

Can software turn an original NX1 into NX1-16?
Do not quote that assumption. They are different platforms; the official matrix retains eight universes for NX1 and sixteen for NX1-16.
Can two licenses add more universes?
Documentation states that one license is active per system, the highest detected. Joining hardware does not establish additive capacity.
Can all output use the four DMX ports?
It depends on universes and paths. Distributing additional physical universes requires network nodes or compatible direct network receivers.
