Yamaha QL5
Mix local and network sources for live sound, conferences and monitor feeds. Check the input port, mix channel and output destination as separate stages before changing a working show.

Model and application
- Manufacturer / model
- Yamaha QL5 digital mixing console.
- Mixing channels
- 64 mono + 8 stereo input mixing channels.
- Local analog I/O
- 32 INPUT XLR inputs; 16 OMNI OUT XLR outputs.
- Dante audio
- 64 inputs / 64 outputs at 48 kHz; PRIMARY / SECONDARY etherCON.
- Surface and buses
- 32 + 2 master faders; 16 MIX and 8 MATRIX buses.
The QL5 provides more local I/O and mono mixing channels than the QL1. Physical inputs, network ports and mixing channels are different resources: 64 Dante inputs do not add 64 mix channels to the 32 local sockets. Yamaha lists the QL5 as discontinued; a specific unit’s condition must be checked separately.
Connections and required equipment
Use local INPUT/OMNI OUT for analog sources and destinations, or Dante with compatible I/O devices and a suitable Gigabit network. A stagebox is needed when the sources must enter remotely rather than through the local sockets. Confirm its exact model, firmware and HA-control compatibility. NETWORK is a separate control port for applications such as QL Editor and StageMix. Other connections include AES/EBU DIGITAL OUT, two Mini-YGDAI slots, WORD CLOCK IN/OUT, MIDI IN/OUT, GPI, PHONES and USB Type-A for memory. Optional cards are not assumed installed; the USB memory connector is not a multichannel USB audio interface.
Prepare the system
- Record the console firmware, scene, installed cards, rack identity and source-to-destination plan. Save a separate backup before changing a working configuration.
- Check the unit’s power nameplate, protective earth and ventilation. Protect the downstream system while making connections; identify sources that require phantom power before touching +48V.
- Compare SECONDARY PORT with the cabling plan. REDUNDANT requires separate primary and secondary networks; do not bridge them or change to DAISY CHAIN as a live troubleshooting shortcut.
- Proposed check: follow one agreed source through GAIN/PATCH, the channel, its bus and the output port at a controlled level. Record the result, change one item at a time and retain a way back.
Questions and troubleshooting
The source is subscribed to DANTE 48, but CH 48 is silent. Where should I look?
A matching number is not an automatic connection. QL5 has Dante channels above 32, but the selected mixing channel still needs the correct input port.
- Confirm the transmitter, transmitting channel and QL5 receiving channel. Check subscription and clock status before repatching; a network link alone does not prove audio is arriving.
- Select CH 48 and inspect GAIN/PATCH. If DANTE 48 is the agreed source, compare that selection with the intended patch. Watch the channel meter and use CUE at a safe headphone level.
- If signal reaches the channel, follow [ON], fader, DCA/mute state, bus and output assignment. Correct only the identified stage and recheck the intended destination; do not initialize the console.
- If CUE has the source but the destination does not, the input path is working: compare the bus and output rather than changing Dante. If an agreed known-good route still fails, save meter/clock observations for support.
Why does a fader change a monitor mix instead of the main mix?
In SENDS ON FADER, the strips control sends to the selected MIX/MATRIX bus. Their [ON] keys also control those sends, so they do not have their normal channel-level role.
- Stop moving faders. Read the selected bus name and note the flashing MIX/MATRIX key; confirm whether the affected destination is the monitor bus.
- To return to normal mode, follow the Owner’s Manual and press the flashing key in the SENDS ON FADER section. Confirm the bank and channel labels before touching levels again.
- In a controlled rehearsal, compare one small send change with the normal channel level and restore its original value. Check the affected monitor feed before returning to operation.
- Normal mode should restore the strips’ channel-level role while the agreed monitor send stays at its saved value. If labels or response disagree, stop changes and have an experienced QL operator review the mode and file.
A scene recalls, but the input patch stays unchanged. What can preserve it?
Global Recall Safe, channel Recall Safe and the destination scene’s Focus can exclude a patch change. A working RECALL does not mean every saved parameter was applied.
- Record the source and destination scenes, the channel and the expected input port. Protect outputs and save the current state before testing recall.
- Inspect CH JOB → RECALL SAFE, including GLOBAL RECALL SAFE → INPUT PATCH, then the channel’s SAFE selection and SCENE → FOCUS. Global INPUT PATCH also covers insert and Direct Out patching; avoid CLEAR ALL.
- If a change is agreed, adjust only the necessary exclusion and test recall in both directions. Compare the port, inserts, Direct Out and listening destination. If the port changes but the wrong source arrives, follow the Dante subscription separately.
- Compare the exact parameter: channel ON and fader level are different recall targets. If an isolated rehearsal still contradicts the displayed safe/focus selections, retain both scenes for Yamaha support; do not initialize the show.
Choose the next check
| Observation | Next check | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| DANTE 48 is assigned, but CH 48 has no meter activity | Subscription/clock, then GAIN/PATCH | Transmitter, receive port and selected channel input |
| Fader movement changes a monitor feed | SENDS ON FADER and selected MIX/MATRIX | Bus name, mode and original send value |
| Scene recall leaves the previous input port | Global/channel Recall Safe and scene Focus | Scene numbers, expected port and active exclusions |
Precautions
- Use only the supply voltage and grounding arrangement specified for the actual unit. Leave ventilation clear; do not open the console.
- Before changing +48V, confirm source compatibility and protect the downstream outputs. Do not use phantom switching to diagnose a missing signal.
- Coordinate gain, routing and recall with other operators when a head amp or Dante device is shared. Do not bypass safety or venue systems.
- Check the manual corresponding to the installed firmware before applying menu instructions. Firmware updates and factory resets are not generic recovery steps.
