Gusman Concert Hall: sound reinforcement, monitors and recording
For a concert, narration or recording at Gusman Concert Hall, separate sound reinforcement, monitors and file delivery. Stereo mix, multitrack and streaming are different services that must be defined before rehearsal.
Which room and service apply to the event?
Gusman Concert Hall is within Frost School of Music, University of Miami, at 1314 Miller Drive, Coral Gables, FL 33146, Miami-Dade County. It is distinct from Watsco Center, Clarke Recital Hall and City of Miami venues.
The institutional page lists 600 seats as reference capacity. The seating chart marks positions where seats or views may be affected by sound reinforcement or computerized lighting. Define the actual installation, FOH, cameras and accessibility before setting event capacity or ticket sales.
Recording Services provides recording and reinforcement under Concert Hall Management for Gusman and Clarke. Its page states equipment is neither rented out nor used outside those two halls. It also says capabilities are being updated and the new list is pending. Check the July 5, 2017 document against the specification accepted for the event; do not transfer Clarke systems or limits to Gusman.
How should instruments, access and acoustic curtain be placed?
Use the official plot to draw the layout and request validation. The front is curved and the sides contain entrances; the dimensions describe neither a clear rectangle nor a load rating.
| Plot reference | What to check |
|---|---|
| 69½ ft at the front; 54½ ft at the rear; indicated depth 36 ft. | Place instruments, risers, monitors and cables within the space actually available. Do not calculate usable area as width times depth. |
| Stage Right Entrance and Stage Left Entrance; Freight Elevator. | Confirm loading route, doors, car dimensions, capacity and freight-elevator operator; do not infer them from its symbol. |
| Storage Closet: Do Not Block. | Keep storage access clear during installation, performance and removal. |
| Rear Curtain: open or close to adjust acoustics. | Agree its position with the venue and keep travel clear. Do not treat it as a fire curtain. |
As a check to perform, compare the same musical passage with the curtain configuration authorized by the operator and listen from the planned positions. Record the accepted position; do not change curtain, gain and monitors together, because the cause of the difference would then be unclear.
When should small or large be requested, and how are monitors counted?
The configurations below come from the 2017 guide. Use them to formulate the request and verify differences without assuming they remain installed or available for a new date.
| Reference configuration | Documented use and limit |
|---|---|
| Small: backstage mixer and 2 overhead arrays. | Narration, limited support for an acoustic performance or stereo playback. Not intended for many inputs or mixing from the audience. |
| Large: 48-input mixer in the audience and 2 main arrays. | FOH mixing of multiple sources. Its position uses audience space and requires checking the layout, view and circulation. |
| Large: provision for 6 separate mixes and 8 monitor speakers. | Mix count and speaker count are different quantities. Define which performer hears each mix and how speakers are distributed. |
| 4 wireless systems with either configuration; maximum 10 with large. | A documentary reference, not current RF availability. Do not add the figures as a guaranteed package. |
Obtain models, bands, receivers, transmitters and RF coordination before assigning frequencies. Confirm the available combination of handheld, headset or lavalier microphones. Input count does not establish a particular mixer, physical patch or transport protocol.
What changes between stereo, multitrack and streaming?
The guide describes 48 channels from stage to booth and live mixing to stereo. It states multitrack may be requested and the client must provide software, hardware and engineering support to complete its mix. A later finished mix is not included by default.
| Deliverable or service | What to agree |
|---|---|
| Stereo | Whether delivery is the concert mix, a recording mix or an ambient pair; editing, program and expected files. |
| Multitrack, up to 48 tracks in the document | Track list and names, formats, sample rate, bit depth, common start, delivery and postproduction responsibility. Channel count guarantees no particular file format. |
| Video and streaming | The video reference excludes editing. Streaming in the guide is limited to Frost School of Music events and conditional on ordering recording; it does not authorize streaming of every external rental. |
Before the event, prepare a sample with Recording Services to check playback, assignment and file delivery. Do not connect a computer to an audio network or change clocking, sample rate or routing without identifying equipment, configuration and the accepted procedure.
How should signal and return to the accepted state be checked?
Prepare a patch showing source, channel, FOH destination, monitor mix and recording track. With the operator, verify a known source and first observe whether signal reaches the room system; then check monitor and recording separately. Sound in the room does not prove the intended track is being recorded.
If room signal is present but a track is missing, compare input assignment and recording destination with the accepted patch. If the track exists but is silent on playback, first verify the file and output assignment. Isolate one variable at a time and retain the last valid file; do not load an unrelated scene to resolve a single path.
Listen to sample playback as well and confirm the deliverable matches the request. Record changes with Recording Services and agree return of patch, room files, curtain position and monitors. These are checks to perform, not results of a completed test.
What remains to approve for installation, power and effects?
The stage plot publishes no hanging points, floor loads, ballast, freight-elevator capacity or temporary power distribution. For extra LED, sound or lighting, prepare complete weights, reactions, proposed supports or points, cable routes and method for venue review. Confirm voltage, circuits, protection and connection responsibility.
Lasers, haze, smoke and pyrotechnics require identification of equipment, manual, operator and scope before acceptance is defined. Keep fire detection active and prepare a particle-free alternative. Do not transfer Watsco, Clarke or another campus’s conditions to this room.
Separate competent Coral Gables authority requirements, venue or university acceptance, organizer scope, contract and technical recommendation. The 2017 guide states 21 days’ notice for service bookings; confirm current lead times, costs, insurance and staffing without treating that reference as a universal permit deadline.
Retain the accepted layout and patch. If instruments, FOH, audience, supports or effects change, submit the difference for renewed review before implementation. Agree installation, rehearsal, unloading and removal in writing; a service request does not establish project technical approval.
Frequently asked questions
Will small work if several sources must be mixed from the audience?
The reference guide does not provide for that: it locates the small mixer backstage and limits it to few sources. Prepare the input list and confirm an FOH solution; do not assume moving the mixer is sufficient.
Do six mixes and eight monitors mean eight independent mixes?
No. Mixes are signals and speakers are physical destinations. Define the signal each position needs and speaker distribution; confirm current outputs and equipment.
Can I request fourteen wireless systems by adding four and ten?
No. The document states four systems and a maximum ten for large, without describing additive packages. Confirm units, band and RF coordination for the event.
Does multitrack include a final mix ready to publish?
Not by default. The guide separates live stereo from multitrack and assigns later mixing resources to the client. Agree files, editing and postproduction before ordering.
Is the guide’s streaming available for any external event?
The reference limits it to Frost School of Music events and makes it conditional on ordering recording. Confirm eligibility, operation and delivery; do not present it as included in any rental.
Does the stage plot authorize a suspended screen or use of the entire front?
No. Its dimensions establish neither load capacity nor guaranteed clear space. Submit structure, weight, reactions and position and keep entrances and storage clear; the project requires specific acceptance.
