OBS Studio 32.2.2: scenes, audio and event recording files

A presentation, a video and a live segment need a clear final picture and a useful recording. Before building OBS scenes, define what each destination receives and who controls changes. This guide covers OBS Studio 32.2.2 on Windows 10/11 or macOS 13 and later, without relying on third-party plugins.

Define program and deliverables before selecting sources

List the requested format, duration, content with audio, display destination and files needed by the editor. Record the version, operating system, GPU, encoder and any plugins on the planned workstation. Software licensing, equipment rental and operating services are separate decisions.

Use the OBS configuration wizard as a starting point, then test its settings with the planned scenes and outputs. Testing on the event workstation lets you assess how the setup handles the project’s load.

Sources → scenes → Program → agreed output / recording

Check local monitoring and recorded tracks separately as you work through this signal chain.

Prepare scenes and check what reaches Program

Organize opening, presentation, video, break and closing scenes around the running order. A source higher in the Sources list can cover lower items. Check order, crop, proportions and text using the destination content.

Studio Mode lets you prepare Preview and send it to Program with Transition. Do not assume every change is isolated: if a source is shared, rehearse its effect on the on-air scene before editing it during a show. Save a copy of the scene collection to prepare changes away from the active program.

To capture slides, select the window or display intended for the audience; check that notes and notifications stay out. On macOS, the capture source and permissions are platform-specific. A capture device name resembling another input does not establish compatibility.

  1. Prepare a different identification image for each scene.
  2. Select the next scene in Preview and confirm Program retains the expected picture.
  3. Transition, check the final picture and rehearse a return to the break scene.

Can you hear it locally but not in the output?

In 32.2.2, Mute and Monitor are independent mixer controls. Check output state, monitoring state and the monitoring device. Avoid copying older instructions that present Monitor Only as an equivalent menu option.

Identify each audio path: microphone, video and desktop or application capture. If the same sound arrives twice, mute one path at a time in the rehearsal copy and listen. Then open a recording sample to check sound and synchronization, as well as watching the meters.

  • Missing voice? Compare the device, mute state, track assignment and the track selected in the player.
  • Doubled video sound? Check whether it also returns through desktop capture or monitoring.
  • Voice seems offset? Compare a visible and audible reference in a sample of the intended output before adjusting sync.

Assign tracks for review and editing

Assign sources to tracks in Advanced Audio Properties; enable the tracks to record in Settings → Output. For example, track 1 can carry the complete mix while other tracks separate voice and media, provided those sources are available separately.

A typical player plays one track at a time. Include a track map and open the recording in the intended editor: check track selection before assuming audio was lost. Separating audio does not create camera ISO recordings.

Recording and remuxing: check files before delivery

Agree on the container and codec with the recipient. The official guide recommends MKV for unexpected interruptions; if one occurs, open and check the file before treating it as recovered. Prepare the path, free space and session name before recording. A separate recording encoder can add load.

If the editor needs MP4 and the combination is compatible, File → Remux Recordings changes the container. Keep the original. Remuxing does not repair missing pictures, synchronization or a codec the destination cannot decode.

  1. During rehearsal, record scene changes, motion, voice and authorized media with the planned outputs.
  2. Stop normally and open the sample: check the beginning, middle, end, duration and tracks.
  3. If remuxing is needed, create a separate output and compare content, duration and tracks against the original.
  4. Deliver a file list, session, version and track map with known interruptions. Check the received copy before releasing the source material.

Slides, video and breaks: prepare program and audio tracks

Example workflow: a talk alternates slides, video and a break; the client needs program and separate voice for editing. Prepare a scene for each state and a track map. Record a sample covering the entire sequence and review it on the intended workstation and destination before the event.

If each destination needs an independent composition or camera ISOs are required, define what each output and file must contain before adding plugins. Another production or recording setup may fit better. Use the streaming guide as well to choose a platform and review access and connectivity.
