American Airlines Center, Dallas: rigging, load-in and technical review
American Airlines Center is at 2500 Victory Avenue in Dallas, Texas. This guide advances production for the arena; it does not cover Miami’s former AmericanAirlines Arena. PNC Plaza and meeting rooms have separate scopes.
Which documents apply to the Dallas arena?
The current website identifies the venue; the commercial page also presents outdoor and meeting spaces. The manual distributed by ArenaNetwork provides production background. A seating plan or PNC Plaza sheet does not replace the arena’s technical packet.
Agree on applicable drawings and revisions, responsible parties and contracted services. The filename date does not automatically update appendices, contacts, inventory or rules; request written confirmation of conditions affecting your design.
How should tour access, docks and parking be advanced?
The manual places load-in on the west side via Victory Avenue or Olive Street. The table retains dated references from pages 2–3; the plan on page 17 distinguishes docks, ramps and garage areas. Drawn parking spaces are not a reservation for your tour.
Request the complete route, including clearances, width, slopes, turns, levelers, pedestrian zones and schedules. Measure vehicles and freight with accessories. Confirm holding areas, maneuvering supervision and spaces that must remain clear.
| Item / dated source | Manual reference | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Docks, p. 3 | From 6 to 8 potentially available. | Assigned docks and work windows. |
| Truck height, p. 3 | 14 ft 6 in restriction. | Actual clearance along the entire route. |
| Parking, p. 2 | Dock, Silver Garage and Valor Street. | Authorization, duration and current plan. |
| Idling, p. 2 | Not allowed in the dock or Silver Garage basement. | Vehicle procedures and shore power. |
Why does the appendix not authorize every rigging point?
Pages 12–13 distinguish spans, panel points, scoreboard zones and adjacent loads. The 3,000 lb span reference and 6,000 lb exception near a panel point depend on adjacent loading; they are not universal WLLs. PA and scoreboard zones have additional restrictions.
The letter on page 14 dates to 2001 and ties its conclusions to a sound-ring configuration. Request current CAD, load tables and conditions, dead loads, reactions and accepted combinations. Do not infer residual capacity from colors, steel sizes or a historical total. Engineering and the venue must accept the project.
How do floor dimensions, ice and stage-deck capacity differ?
Page 3 distinguishes an 85 ft × 200 ft floor with dasher boards from 85 ft × 225 ft with the south end modified. These are documented geometries, not structural ratings or space available to your event. Confirm current ice schedules, configuration and protection.
Page 4 assigns 125 PSF to stage decks; this is not the arena floor rating. Request uniform, concentrated and wheel-load limits, support reactions and a load-spreading plan. Forklifts, stages and access require specific availability, operators and acceptance.
How should power be reviewed without adding services or assuming voltage?
Page 2 lists three-phase 800, 600, 400 and 200 A services in stage areas, plus catwalk and shore power. The list proves neither simultaneous available demand nor a common voltage inferred from a label on another drawing.
The manual assigns power connections to the house electrician. Reconfirm that procedure, the current single-line diagram, shared supplies, protection, phases, neutral/ground, connectors and reserved circuits. Nominal distances to electrical rooms neither determine final cable runs nor authorize outside tie-ins.
What needs verification for the scoreboard, video, sound and lighting?
Pages 4 and 15 describe historical systems and elevations. Scoreboard position is neither touring clearance nor an authorized position for your load-in. Request current conditions, obstructions and coordination with the rig plot.
Request LED templates, available zones, screen rights, formats, operation, audio/intercom patches and signal tests. Historical inventory does not guarantee included touring PA, spots or networking. Public Wi-Fi on page 5 does not establish a dedicated transmission link.
How do general deadlines and engineering review relate?
Page 3 requests rigging plans generally; page 15 adds a condition for heavier rigs. Do not treat that condition as an exemption for lighter loads. The table records references from the dated manual, rather than a guaranteed current schedule.
Agree on reference dates, revision, working days, costs and acceptance owners. Engineering, logistics and services need confirmation before the schedule is committed. Early shipments require agreement; delivery does not reserve a dock or storage.
| Task / source | Published advance | Scope to reconfirm |
|---|---|---|
| General rigging, p. 3 | At least 2 weeks before the show. | Points, weights, plans and side views. |
| Rig over 130,000 lb, p. 15 | 14 days before the show. | Engineering review for a fee; no inferred exemption. |
| Shipping, p. 7 | No more than 48 hours early without agreement. | Receipt, labels, storage and removal. |
| Telephone service, p. 5 | At least 2 weeks before the event. | Current service and support, excluding old prices. |
What should be agreed for labor, effects and final scope?
Page 6 names Upstage Center as the exclusive labor company in that manual. Confirm the current provider, jurisdictions, minimums and contract; the dated statement proves neither present exclusivity nor authorization for outside operators. Do not adopt historical prices or personal contacts as current.
Pages 6–7 require haze coordination and refer pyrotechnics to the Dallas Fire Department. Request current venue and authority requirements; no permits, alarm intervention or physical tests are validated here. As a technical recommendation, secure acceptance of owners, insurance and system tests before the show.
Frequently asked questions
Does staying below the appendix threshold avoid submitting rigging plans?
No. The manual contains a general rigging-plan instruction and another condition for heavier-load review. Request current requirements and acceptance of the complete design.
Is the deck rating also the arena floor rating?
No. It refers to staging. The floor, ice protection, supports and wheels need their own limits for the actual project.
Does a current link make the manual and its labor exclusivity current?
No. The filename indicates 2021 and includes a letter from 2001. The venue must confirm the current revision, providers, contract and services.
