Continuous load, demand and diversity: proposal assumptions
A useful proposal shows how projected demand was established. Reducing a total because “it never all runs together” requires operating evidence and design review.
Distinguish connected load, demand and duration
- Connected load: which equipment is included and what its electrical input ratings are.
- Projected demand: which loads can run together, under which conditions; identify each scenario and its basis.
- Duration: how long each current level may continue. A qualified professional determines continuous-load treatment under the applicable rules and equipment conditions.
A scenario does not establish contracted capacity
| Assumption | Arithmetic result | Review still needed |
|---|---|---|
| Group A at 3 kW and group B at 2 kW together | 5 kW | Actual supply and operating conditions |
| A and B never overlap | Scenario maximum: 3 kW | Confirm what prevents A and B from overlapping, along with startup and design criteria |
Do not use the second scenario if a test, transition or show change allows overlap. Retain the connected-load total and record who reviewed the assumption. This example selects neither circuits nor protective devices.
Define each factor and its scope
For a coincidence factor, state the formula, load group and time period. Formal diversity factor is its reciprocal, although terminology varies across documents. Writing only “diversity 0.6” is ambiguous.
Compare an unreduced proposal with a scenario-based proposal. In the United States, continuous-load treatment and specifically marked assemblies require review of their conditions. Do not apply an 80% rule universally or carry it automatically into Argentina.
Planning questions
Is a continuous load the show’s average demand?
An average does not determine classification. Record expected current and duration and ask the professional to apply the appropriate criteria.
Can I copy a factor from a building-load table?
Only after verifying its scope and use. Factors from other installation types do not establish event simultaneity.
Does a previous measurement justify a smaller supply?
It may provide evidence when equipment, configuration and operation match. Record its limits; it does not by itself establish future maxima or startup behavior.
Sources and scope
Technical reference documentation. Venue staff and a qualified professional review its application to the actual installation.
- Schneider Electric — Estimation of actual maximum kVA demand
- UL Solutions — Circuit breaker marking guide, item 38 (U.S.)
Before finalizing the supply, confirm venue and local authority requirements in the United States, or utility and local requirements for an event in Argentina. Confirm the actual site’s electrical configuration regardless of this guide’s language.
