Stage access: ramps, stairs, handrails and guards

Check access geometry, system connections and local requirements together.

Define users, route and jurisdiction

Ask GLMedia about rental options for your event. The proposal is subject to availability, confirmation of the model and configuration, and the venue’s technical requirements.

Identify the venue and jurisdiction, users and intended route. A handrail provides a grasping surface; a guard protects an open edge. One does not automatically satisfy the other.

Access geometry and U.S. reference scope

U.S. reference
Where ADA ramp requirements apply, the general running-slope limit is 1:12. Scope and specific existing-facility exceptions need review.
Complete route
Landings, clear width, cross slope, edge protection, handrails and the stage transition must also be checked.

Access components need documented capacity and compatible attachment. An accessible route is not established by slope or a product label alone.

Supports, connections and edge protection

Specify the matching ramp or stairs, supports, connectors, rails and guards. Resolve circulation and egress with the venue; U.S. ADA references do not replace the locally adopted requirements.

Survey finished levels and the complete route

  1. Measure the actual finished stage height and available plan area.
  2. Review the complete design and applicable rules before assembly.
  3. Inspect connections and all transitions before opening the route.

Three technical questions

The ramp does not fit. Can it simply be made steeper?

Do not improvise. Review stage height, route layout or another approved access solution with the venue and designer.

The final step has a different rise. Can a loose block correct it?

Close access and resolve the stair assembly and finished height. Do not add loose packing or conceal the mismatch.

Measure the finished floor-to-stage rise and each step transition, including the final step after finishes are installed. Compare the stair reference and support arrangement with the approved design. A nominal leg height does not establish the finished transition geometry.

Does a handrail also approve the open side of the stage?

No. Confirm the separate guard and edge-protection requirements and the mounting capacity for the actual location.

Before anyone uses the stage

Confirm current local applicability for each event. Do not remove protection for equipment delivery without a controlled plan and restoration before use.
