NovaStar H2

NovaStar H2: cards, web control, preview and fiber checks

Prepare the H2 configuration, keep the control network separate from LED sending and check what an optical link status means before changing the map.

GLMedia / NovaStar H2

Modular processing in a 2U chassis

The H2 arranges several video sources using interchangeable cards in a 2U chassis. It supports preparing compositions for an LED display or a video distribution system according to the installed outputs.

Where we would consider it

  • Hotel and conference presentations combining content and cameras.
  • Systems with several image areas and preset-based layout changes.
  • Projects requiring card-specific interfaces within two rack units.

Features and their implications

  • 2U chassis, up to four input cards and two output cards.
  • Up to 32 layers; actual capacity depends on cards and mode.
  • Total load changes with the sending-card type; physical screen dimensions alone do not determine it.

HDMI 4K60, 12G-SDI and layer count require checking installed cards. H5 limits do not carry over to H2.

Load depends on frame rate, bit depth, receiving cards and configuration. Maximum width and height must not be combined as an available resolution.

Advantages for the system

  • The 2U format uses less rack space than larger H Series chassis.
  • Cards let you specify the connections needed for the project.

Limitations to consider

  • There are four input slots and two output slots; count the required interfaces before selecting it.
  • Video outputs and LED sending cards serve different functions; the system design must account for both.

How to choose

Compare source count, interfaces and outputs. Consider the H2 when the required configuration fits its slots and documented capabilities.

Before taking it to the event

  1. List sources, signal formats and the areas they must occupy.
  2. Identify cards and confirm the path to the LED receiving cards.
  3. Keep the configuration and rehearse every preset with actual signals.

Compare your project requirements

The score counts requirements documented in these profiles. Conditional items appear separately. This is GLMedia editorial guidance, not a performance test or user rating.

Planning an event?

Along with finding the manual, you can discuss the complete system: display, processing, signal and operation. Choose a service or city to continue.

Model and version

Reference: H Series User Manual V1.15.0 and H2 Specifications V1.17.0. Functions depend on installed cards and firmware; not every H9 front-panel instruction applies to the H2. Confirm configuration, location and availability for the event date.

Prepare the check

Read the input, output and control labels on the rear panel, along with the installed version. Have each source format, pixel dimensions and data path ready. Keep the starting configuration before writing changes; output tests must be scheduled outside live event operation.

Operating questions

What should I confirm before booking an H2 for several screens?

The H2 occupies 2U and accepts up to four input cards and two output cards. That does not mean four sources of any format or two screens of any size: usable connectors and capacity depend on the installed part numbers. List the simultaneous sources with resolution and frame rate, then the LED surfaces and load assigned to each port.

Specifications V1.17.0 list system maxima of 20.8 million pixels with H_16xRJ45+2xfiber and 26 million with H_20xRJ45. These are not per-port capacities and do not prove the offered unit contains those cards. Check width, height, frame rate and bit-depth limits too. If an output is overloaded, redistribute the map or review the hardware before approving the setup.

How do I control the H2 if its front display does not allow editing?

Manual V1.15.0 states that the H2 does not support the LCD menu operations illustrated using an H9. For control, connect the computer to Ethernet on the H_Control card, directly or through the planned control network, and open the IP reported by the device in a browser. RJ45 ports on an LED sending card do not replace this control port.

For a direct connection, the computer and H2 need different addresses in the same subnet. If the web login does not appear, check cable, port, IP and subnet mask on the interface in use; do not assume the factory address is still active. Once connected, verify model and cards in Device before editing. An access failure does not justify resetting the processor or changing receiving-card configuration during the show.

Why can I control the H2 but cannot see sources in Multiviewer?

Preview requires the H_2xRJ45+1xHDMI1.3 preview card. Web access or a detected input does not confirm that card is fitted. Check its part number and wiring first: for web monitoring, one of its Ethernet ports and the control Ethernet must connect to the same switch; its HDMI can feed a local monitor.

With that path ready, open Multiviewer and drag sources from Input or screens from Screen into the monitoring area. If a window stays empty, check that you added the correct source and that it has signal; then compare with the local monitor if available. Do not remap the LED wall just because preview fails. An image in Multiviewer does not validate wall colorimetry or physical mapping either.

Does a green OPT port confirm that video is reaching the screen?

No. The H2 V1.17.0 optical instructions describe abnormal TX with normal RX showing green while the screen is black. They also describe the reverse: normal TX, abnormal RX, a gray indicator and normal display. Port color alone does not confirm the forward and return paths.

Trace the link from the card to the receiver or optical converter, identifying TX/RX and the module and fiber types supported at both ends. During a test window, compare a known signal or the processor test pattern with what reaches the destination; if the pattern arrives but the source does not, check the input and composition before moving fiber. If neither arrives, check the output path with compatible components and restore the starting connection if the test makes matters worse.
