Questions and troubleshooting

My keyboard sounds quiet through the QSC K8.2: should I select LINE, HI-Z or MIC?

For a line-level output, start with LINE and check the source level. A accepts LINE or MIC; B accepts LINE or high impedance, labelled HI-Z on the panel and INST in the menu. QSC reserves MIC for a directly connected microphone and HI-Z for instruments with passive pickups. Using MIC with a line-level output can cause distortion; switching to that sensitivity raises the level considerably.

  1. With the source silent and gains low, identify the output and cable. Open INPUT B using the selector knob and Enter button, choose LINE and confirm. Return with Exit: the display should show B: LINE and the yellow HI-Z LED should be off. For A, check INPUT A. Keep a photo of the previous setting.
  2. During soundcheck, repeat a phrase or passage and gradually raise the source output and input GAIN. Watch SIG and listen for distortion. If SIG does not respond, try a known working cable and source before increasing the level further.
  3. For a directly connected microphone, use A in MIC. The K8.2 does not supply phantom power: if the microphone requires it, identify its supply or mixer and check that manual. Check the line-level path before adding a preamp.
The K8.2 powers on but stays silent with green SIG LEDs: how do I separate configuration from a fault?

Compare the source, cable and input with known working equipment, without opening the loudspeaker. SIG indicates a signal, but does not confirm that the amplifier and drivers work. If another speaker works with the same path and this one does not, keep that comparison for technical service; the actual fault still needs to be identified.

Check the version in SETTINGS before the event. QSC requires the K.2 series to run the current firmware; its notes list 2.1.43 and Updater 2.2.6, with changes to protection, atypical-voltage handling and settings retention. Updating does not establish that this symptom is repaired. Schedule that task outside the show: the procedure can take up to 15 minutes per speaker and has two stages. Do not interrupt USB or power during the process.

  1. Record the input, GAIN, preset, SUB, EQ, DELAY, scenes and firmware. FACTORY RESET clears parameters and scenes with no undo; preserve that state before comparing.
  2. Before the trial, disconnect the sources and note whether SIG remains lit with no signal connected. Then test one input with a signal and cable that work on another speaker, using the appropriate sensitivity. If the fault follows the cable or source, check that section; if it stays with this unit, remove it from use and prepare a spare.
  3. If LIMITER stays lit, reduce the signal and check ventilation: QSC requires 152 mm of clearance behind the speaker, with no drapes blocking airflow. A persistent fault needs authorised service. Keep protective earth connected; do not attempt an internal repair based on LEDs or a photo.
A second K8.2 changes level or does not copy the preset: should I use A/B THRU or MIX OUT?

Use A/B THRU to forward only that channel’s signal: it leaves before GAIN and DSP in the first speaker. MIX OUT (POST GAIN) sums A, B and C after their GAIN controls; lowering an input changes its contribution to the outgoing mix. Preset, EQ and delay do not travel through MIX OUT either. Set the second speaker for its role.

C sums its 3.5 mm stereo input to mono. Feeding that MIX OUT to two speakers sends the same mono mix; to keep L/R, route each output separately. Never connect MIX OUT to an input on the same K8.2.

For a stage monitor, check the second speaker’s PRESET: STAGE MONITOR 1 reduces bass build-up; STAGE MONITOR 2 is for applications needing low-frequency reproduction. Open PRESET with the selector and Enter, select and confirm; the triangle marks the active preset. Test from the musician’s position, without assuming the preset prevents feedback.

  1. Draw the source, input, selected output and destination. To distribute only A or B, use its pass-through; for the local mix, use MIX OUT and a line-level input on the second speaker.
  2. To compare outputs during the trial, lower the first speaker’s GAIN for the channel in use and listen to the second. With A/B THRU, that change should not alter the forwarded signal; with MIX OUT, it changes that channel’s contribution. The manual’s reference for GAIN on the second speaker with MIX OUT is 0 dB. Also compare sensitivity, preset and position.
  3. QSC specifies powering on the speaker supplying the signal first, then the receiving speaker; power off in reverse order. Keep the source output low at power-on. This reduces thumps and noise from the power sequence.

ConnectionFunctionWhat to check
INPUT ALINE / MICMIC for a directly connected microphone; no phantom power
INPUT BLINE / HI-Z (INST)LINE for a line-level output; INST for a passive pickup
INPUT C3.5 mm stereo summed to monoDoes not retain separate L/R
A / B pass-throughSignal from the same channelBefore GAIN and DSP; does not carry the A+B+C mix
MIX OUT (POST GAIN)Sums A+B+C after GAINNo DSP; do not return to an input on the same speaker

Checks before the event

Record the source, cable, input, sensitivity, GAIN and destination before changing the setup. Compare one element at a time to identify which section the problem follows.

Complete the worksheet during soundcheck: it includes the initial state, SIG/LIMITER, output used, change made, result and final configuration.

Check installed firmware and prepare signal trials and a spare before the event. A persistent fault needs service diagnosis.

Suspension, supports, loads, venue power and internal repairs require specific identification and documentation.
