Yamaha VXS10S: amplification, satellites and troubleshooting
Connect the passive VXS10S subwoofer, trace CH1 and CH2 to their satellites and investigate lost audio without confusing it with the constant-voltage VXS10ST.
Model and scope
VXS10S is a dual-voice-coil subwoofer rated at 8 Ω + 8 Ω. Its CH1 and CH2 inputs are not the Input/Loop Thru connections of VXS10ST. This guide uses Yamaha manual VED2080, edition E0, and the satellite connection guide; do not apply the ST model’s 70 V/100 V settings to VXS10S.
Prepare the connections
With every device powered off and levels at minimum, identify INPUT and SATELLITE SPEAKERS. Prepare speaker cable, check polarity and ensure no loose strand bridges terminals. Record the amplifier, satellite models and their impedance before connecting the system.
Connection and operating questions
Can I connect it directly to a mixer, and how do CH1 and CH2 work?
It needs a power amplifier: a mixer’s line output cannot drive this passive subwoofer. In Yamaha’s stereo diagram, two amplifier channels feed CH1 and CH2 separately. CH1 continues to ST1 and CH2 to ST2; the subwoofer reproduces the contribution from both voice coils. Do not join amplifier outputs together to create mono.
Yamaha’s guide also shows a mono configuration using only one voice coil. It notes that some performance specifications then differ from those based on both coils. Choose a complete diagram from the guide and an amplifier compatible with the load; do not derive a power rating by combining figures for different models.
How many satellites can I connect to ST1 and ST2?
Yamaha recommends VXS5, VXC4 or VXC6 for the built-in high-pass filter. Set each satellite to 8 Ω, not a 70 V/100 V tap. VXS10S recommends an 8 Ω load per satellite output and permits a minimum of 4 Ω per ST1 or ST2. One 8 Ω speaker presents 8 Ω; two 8 Ω speakers in parallel present 4 Ω.
That limit applies to each satellite output; it does not approve any arbitrary amplifier load. Check the amplifier’s rated load and the complete wiring diagram too. ST outputs are filtered, not full-range Loop Thru connections. If a speaker’s impedance is unknown, identify it before expanding the system.
What should I check if the subwoofer or a satellite stops playing?
Immediately reduce amplifier level. The manual describes internal protection against excessive input that may restore sound within a few seconds once level is reduced. If sound returns, check input level, clipping and load before continuing; do not return to the level that caused the cutoff or keep operating with distortion.
If sound does not return, power devices off before inspecting or changing cables. Trace the same channel: amplifier output → INPUT CH1 → ST1, or CH2 → ST2. First confirm the amplifier supplies that channel, then check polarity, Euroblock retention and cable continuity with the system disconnected. If a known-correct connection does not resolve the fault, stop using the unit and refer it for service; do not open the cabinet.
Can I mount it on a wall or ceiling with UB-DXR8?
The manual separates two arrangements: the supplied brackets for walls and the optional UB-DXR8 for ceilings. For this subwoofer, it prohibits using the supplied brackets on a ceiling or UB-DXR8 on a wall. The ceiling procedure uses 14 mm rubber spacers and hex bolts with washers supplied with VXS10S; do not simply copy the hardware specified for DXR8.
The supporting surface, anchors and safety wire must suit the complete assembly and actual installation. Yamaha requires two or more people for the work and measures to prevent a fall. A qualified installer must follow the manual drawings and verify the structure. Do not suspend the unit if hardware is missing or the support capacity cannot be established.
Signal path and checks
| Situation | Check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| INPUT CH1 / CH2 | Two separate power-amplifier inputs | Trace each channel without joining amplifier outputs. |
| ST1 / ST2 | Satellites set to 8 Ω; combined minimum 4 Ω per output | Check the wiring diagram and amplifier load rating. |
| Cutoff or distortion | Reduce level; check protection and signal path | Power off before changing wiring; stop use if the fault persists. |
