Questions and troubleshooting
Yamaha XMV4280 NETWORK is lit but a zone has no audio. How do I check analogue input, YDIF and mute?
Check the channel’s SRC, MUTE and ATT before raising the level. On XMV4280, NETWORK indicates a control-network link; it does not confirm incoming audio. Its digital inputs are YDIF. XMV4280-D uses Dante: identify the full label and connectors before looking for subscriptions in Dante Controller.
If sound suddenly disappeared during use, or there is damage, smoke or an unusual smell, follow the manufacturer’s Precautions: switch off, disconnect power and leave inspection to qualified service personnel.
- Record source, physical input, output channel and POWER, MUTE, SIGNAL, YDIF, LIMIT and PROTECTION states. Flashing POWER indicates standby; check the REMOTE control or editor managing that state without bridging the connector. Yamaha requires equipment to be switched off and levels set to minimum before handling connections.
- Check SRC selection: hold FUNCTION and turn the encoder to SRC; press SELECT for the channel, then release FUNCTION to read the value without turning the encoder again. ANA means the analogue Euroblock input; DIG means YDIF on XMV4280. Do not change the source before preparing the test: selecting ANA in a YDIF network can interrupt audio passing to other devices. The topology and processor configuration must be documented.
- For a YDIF path, its green indicator confirms a normal connection and valid word clock, not the correct programme for the zone. NETWORK and YDIF have different functions despite both using RJ45. Check the routing against the processor’s identified ports; do not connect YDIF to an ordinary Ethernet switch or interpret NETWORK as a Dante input. For YDIF, Yamaha specifies CAT5e or better STP, straight-through wiring of all pins and up to 30 m between devices. Check the cable and length of that section.
- In a prepared test, check the channel’s MUTE: hold MUTE and press its SELECT to toggle it. The yellow indicator should go out when unmuted. If PANEL LOCK prevents operation, FUNCTION + SELECT A temporarily unlocks it; it relocks after one minute without operation or at power-off. Preserve the lock intended for the event.
- To read or adjust attenuation, select ATT with FUNCTION and the encoder, select the channel with SELECT, then use the encoder for its value. The range is −99 to 0 dB in 1 dB steps. For a wiring check, Yamaha proposes starting at −99 dB and increasing gradually with a known signal. Record whether SIGNAL is set to SIG → IN or OUT: its meaning changes, and a green light does not prove that every speaker is audible. If configuration matches but there is no audio, continue checking the output or line.
XMV4280 channels A and C work but B or D are silent. Is Double Power active?
This may be the expected behaviour of Double Power. With low-impedance connections, this mode uses a pair’s capacity for one output: B is disabled in A/B, and D in C/D. Unmuting or sending another signal cannot restore a channel disabled by the mode.
- Before touching DIP switches or cables, save the configuration and switch off/disconnect the amplifier. Read the SPEAKERS block, which is separate from Device setup: switches 1–4 configure C/D and 5–8 configure A/B. Selection applies per pair; a change may also affect the working channel.
- Check load and mode against the model’s table: for XMV4280, the manual specifies 280 W per channel into 4 Ω or 8 Ω, and 560 W in Double Power, with B/D disabled in the corresponding pairs. For 70 V or 100 V it specifies 250 W per channel. The table on p.234 states 1 kHz, THD+N=1% and a 20 ms burst; these are specification conditions and do not establish the installed output or load.
- If you need four independent outputs, first verify that load and wiring permit the selected mode. Do not remove Double Power as a blind test: at 8 Ω the terminals’ operation also changes. Yamaha warns against joining negative terminals of different channels or contact with other terminals or the chassis. Consult the complete drawings before rewiring; do not adapt another amplifier’s cable by resemblance.
- Only after identifying speakers, cables and mode, check one channel at a time at low level and record which output responds. If B/D remain silent with four channels enabled, return to MUTE, ATT, input and protection checks; the A/C pattern alone does not confirm a fault. Do not change DIP switches with power on: the manual requires power-off so the change applies at the next startup.
A 70 V zone loses level or cuts out with XMV4280. How can I separate load, line and amplifier faults?
Record channel, indicators and line configuration before moving it to another output. A tap sum within the planned power does not rule out damaged wiring, a faulty transformer or overcurrent protection. If the loss occurred suddenly during use, the manual requires power-off, disconnection and qualified inspection.
- Create a zone record: each speaker’s model and manual, actual voltage and tap, quantity, cable route, joints and output used. An inventory row or a distant photograph of a selector does not confirm transformer or tap. Without those details, do not move the line to a 4/8 Ω output or increase voltage to compensate for low level.
- Check SPEAKERS and the XMV4280 high-impedance ratings. The output table and specifications state 250 W per channel at 70 V/100 V. Yamaha recommends allowing a 20% margin when planning transformer-equipped speakers. As a proposed calculation, 250 × 0.8 = 200 W; six 30 W taps total 180 W. This calculation does not measure the line, confirm installed taps or prove that a 180 W system is healthy.
- Review recorded PROTECTION, LIMIT and ALERT states. The manual describes repeated muting under overcurrent and alerts such as 105 for a detected output short circuit. Keep the exact number; do not automatically translate it into a failed speaker. If ALERT stays lit, Yamaha requires stopping use. For DC at the output, alert 100, it requires removing the unit from operation and contacting service.
- For full-range speakers on high-impedance connections, Yamaha recommends HPF at 80 Hz; HPF cannot be switched off in this mode. Record the setting before changing it. Reducing bass or level may change the symptom but does not demonstrate that a cable or transformer has been repaired.
- Section-by-section checks belong with a technician who has access to the line and documentation for it and the measuring instrument. Isolate it from the switched-off, disconnected amplifier before handling connections; do not split an energised line or apply a meter to a working output. Draw which section retains each speaker. If inspection permits an audio test, change one section at a time and record the result with the same source and level. Do not declare the last speaker added faulty simply because the symptom returned.
Read the indicator together with the selected mode
| Observation | What it establishes | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Green NETWORK | Control-network link | Physical input, SRC and signal; does not prove audio or Dante |
| Green YDIF | Normal connection and valid word clock | Digital channel and programme assigned to the zone |
| SIGNAL with SIG → IN | Input above the specified threshold (−40 dBFS) | Mute, attenuation, output mode and destination |
| SIGNAL with SIG → OUT | Output exceeds its mode-dependent threshold | Line and speakers; does not confirm listening or each speaker’s condition |
| B/D silent with low-impedance connections | May correspond to Double Power per pair | SPEAKERS, load and terminal drawing before changes |
| PROTECTION or ALERT | Protection operated or the unit has an alert | Exact number and manual procedure; not an automatic speaker diagnosis |
Checks before the event
Use the blank record to trace source → input → channel → line → speakers. Separate observed facts from the cause still under consideration.
Comparing outputs requires the same mode and an identified compatible load. Keep the alert number and previous configuration; leave internal work to service.

The high-impedance example on p.30 mentions 280 W and 24 speakers of 10 W. It does not match the 250 W tables on pp.15 and 234 or directly reproduce the 20% margin. Use the specific high-impedance tables; the example remains pending manufacturer clarification. The 200 W calculation is planning, not a tested load.
Before applying these settings, identify the firmware, editor, processor, load, taps and connectors. Check the complete signal path with a known signal and listen in each zone.
