Panasonic GH6 with SSD: power, heat and event recording files
If a GH6 does not offer more than 60 fps with SSD, shuts down when SSD is enabled or needs to retain another copy, first identify the recording path and power supply. This guide brings together model-specific controls and the 2.2/2.3 supplements, with a proposed recording test for sports, shows and demonstrations.
Identify the format, power supply and file destination
Before preparing a take for a show, sport or demonstration, record DC-GH6, firmware, Rec. File Format, Rec Quality, frame rate and medium. Include the battery or adapter, SSD product code and capacity, and cable. Those details help distinguish a limited menu, a power warning and an interrupted take; the three symptoms need different checks.
The official GH6 help page describes USB Type-C, SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 2) and SSDs up to 2 TB. Obtain the drive’s product code and check the Panasonic list dated February 9, 2024, which reports basic operation, not every mode. An SSD family name does not identify the unit in the setup.
Agree on which camera preserves each range and how the additional copy is obtained. Record the expected file and who can review it when the take ends. If you also need live replay, consult GH6 HDMI and VFR/HFR formats: the USB recording and HDMI capture have their own conditions.
| Symptom or requirement | First detail to record | Proposed check |
|---|---|---|
| Modes above 60 fps are unavailable | Firmware, power supply, Dynamic Range Boost and destination | Compare settings with the intended quality and recording path. |
| Camera shuts down when SSD is enabled | Message, exact battery, drive and cable | Keep the context and test off-air with a documented configuration. |
| Another copy of the take is needed | SSD or cards, paths and people responsible | Review files from each capture, not just inserted media. |
SSD is limited to 60 fps: check firmware changes and power requirements
The official firmware 2.2 announcement documented USB-SSD recording with a 60p limit. The GH6 firmware history records a later improvement in 2.3, dated July 11, 2023. Compare the source’s version and scope before treating 2022 advice as a restriction on every version.
The DVQP2441 supplement for 2.3 supports Rec Quality above 60.00p and VFR above 60 fps on SSD when Panasonic DMW-AC10 and DMW-DCC17 are used together. A BLK22 battery or updated firmware alone does not establish that condition.
For VFR, the model’s manual also limits frame rate to 60 fps with Dynamic Range Boost ON.
Check one setting at a time first, without changing the drive yet. Record which recording qualities appear with the documented power supply, save the previous configuration and record a sample in the mode you need. Review the file before extending the test to the event’s duration. The worksheet separates available menu options, the recorded take and reviewed footage.
Shutdown when SSD is enabled: identify the battery and keep the message
Before attributing the shutdown to the battery, identify its manufacturer and model, charge level and the camera’s exact message. Keep the initial configuration and compare one variable per test; another battery working does not by itself explain why the first take stopped.
In Charging the Battery, DVQP2441, Panasonic identifies DMW-BLK22 and recommends a genuine battery. DMW-BLF19 can be used with limitations: it does not enable recording qualities above C4K or HFR/VFR above 60. The SSD section excludes that battery from USB recording. Check the complete model; a battery fitting the camera does not establish support for every function.
The SSD section explains that the camera powers the drive and may display an insufficient-power warning. Keep the text, timing and recording state. A comparison with the documented power supply can help locate the problem; it does not establish in advance that every shutdown is caused by the battery.
To check the SSD, Panasonic’s list distinguishes Extreme PRO SDSSDE81-1T00-* and SDSSDE81-2T00-* from other families. The asterisk represents product-code variants. Record the code, capacity and cable condition; the list calls for testing with the actual format and settings.
If the shutdown repeats, stop the test and preserve the existing files and record. Avoid removing the cable or power while the camera recognizes the SSD; the disconnection procedure appears below. Do not erase footage to test a power-supply hypothesis.
SSD and cards: define where recording happens and where the copy will be
Support for External USB Drive, firmware 2.2 states that USB-SSD ON prevents card use and Double Card Slot Function. To return to cards, set it to OFF. It also excludes USB hubs, conversion adapters and extension cables. Do not plan simultaneous card backup or a hub connection with USB-SSD ON.
If you need another file, draw a separate capture path and test it with its equipment and formats. Also check what it shares with the main take: camera, output or power supply. An additional recorder can preserve another file while still depending on the same signal.
Before changing destinations, agree on a pause or a capture that covers the interval. Record the last SSD file and first card file, then open both during review. Connect those segments to the session matrix and delivery.
| Requested footage | Path to prepare | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| Main take | Destination selected in the camera | File, duration and content. |
| Additional copy | Agreed separate capture | Format, audio and shared dependencies. |
| Change from SSD to card | Prepared transition between takes | Before/after files and interval covered. |
Prepare the drive, end the take and review a copy
Panasonic help requires formatting the SSD in the camera before use. USB-SSD Format erases everything: preserve and verify the data you need before preparing the drive designated for testing. Do not switch off the camera or interrupt formatting.
The manual calls for the cable supplied with the SSD. During the test, secure the camera, drive and cable so operating movements do not pull on the connector. Record any cable change and repeat the same take to compare.
To remove the drive, follow Removing the External SSD: end the take, set USB-SSD to OFF and wait for the SSD icon to change to the card icon before disconnecting. Then open a copy in the editor and review picture, speech, duration and the agreed excerpts.
The durations in the 2.3 supplement are approximate and describe storage capacity for specific formats. They do not verify power runtime, temperature or continuity of the setup. Run a test with the agreed duration and operation, recording used space before/after, warnings and the reviewed file in the worksheet.
If a take will not open, preserve the medium and a copy of the files without overwriting them; identify which operation occurred. The Video Repair supplement selects card slots; it does not describe direct repair from SSD. Consult the .mdt file guide to establish the scope of repair and take review.
Assign a drive to the test
Record the model, capacity and existing footage. Prepare a copy of the data you need before any formatting.
Check an identifiable take
Use movement and recognizable speech with the intended settings. Record the message, duration, power supply and generated file.
End recording and disconnect according to the manual
USB-SSD OFF, card icon confirmed, then disconnect. Keep the shutdown result and reviewed sample.
Temperature warning: check the recording and HDMI output
When a warning appears, record the recording quality, previous operating time, environment and active paths. Check separately whether the SSD file, HDMI signal or both stopped; that distinction identifies footage still needing review and the backup the event needs.
The GH6 SSD supplement says a temperature rise can stop recording and HDMI. Record the icon and message, file state and received signal. The model’s Troubleshooting section says to wait for the temperature to fall and the message indicating the camera can be used again; then switch it off and on.
Check a take with the settings, duration, ambient light and position planned for the event. Also record the preceding standby time: a test begun immediately after power-on does not reproduce a day with prior use. If a warning appears, keep the record and follow the manufacturer’s procedure, without extending the test to force a shutdown.
For an additional copy, identify dependencies. A recorder connected to that GH6’s HDMI still receives the same camera. Agree on a backup camera or image, who selects it and which file preserves the interval. Consult replay and capture and the session plan.
| Path | What it shares with the take | Proposed test |
|---|---|---|
| File on the GH6 SSD | Camera and setup power supply | Duration, warnings, file and speech reviewed. |
| Recording/capture from that GH6’s HDMI | The same camera’s output | Signal state during operation and switch to backup. |
| Another camera or backup image | Dependencies to identify | Framing, sound, selection and recorded interval. |
Fan Mode and Thermal Management: check the setting that remains active
On GH6, Custom > IN/OUT > Fan Mode controls the fan. AUTO1 switches between SLOW/NORMAL and prioritizes limiting temperature; AUTO2, the default, switches between OFF/SLOW/NORMAL. FAST maintains high speed. Verify the setting after selecting Rec Quality: above C4K, above 60.00p or VFR above 60 fps, SLOW changes to AUTO1. OFF can only be selected in iA/P/A/S/M.
Setup > Monitor / Display > Thermal Management > Recording Max Temperature controls the shutdown threshold. HIGH raises it and the body may become hotter. Panasonic specifies a tripod or other support and warns about burns from prolonged contact; it calls for STANDARD for handheld use. Raising the threshold does not verify how long a take will last.
Before the test, record both controls and their actual state after changing quality or frame rate. Compare one configuration at a time with the same speech and microphone position. Check temperature/warnings and the file’s audio; do not choose a mode only because the body seems quieter in standby.
If The fan is not functioning correctly. appears, the manual says to switch off and on, then consult the dealer if the fan still does not work. Avoid prolonged use in that state. A failure message calls for a different response from automatic operation; keep its text before changing settings.
| Setup detail | What to record | What to check afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Fan Mode | Chosen value and quality/frame rate | Whether the value remains or changes after configuration. |
| Recording Max Temperature | HIGH/STANDARD and supported/handheld operation | Manual conditions, warnings and tested duration. |
| Fan message | Complete text and time | Result of the specified restart or pending support consultation. |
Noise in the audio: compare fan, focusing and microphone
Locate the noise in a specific sample and note whether it coincides with focusing, a fan change or handling the camera. Identify the lens, microphone and audio path before changing settings.
Using AF (Video), DVQP2441 warns that autofocus sound can be recorded and suggests Continuous AF OFF when it is distracting: this holds the focus point set at the start of the take. In Creative Video mode, MODE1 changes to MODE2 when HDMI is used, so it may also focus during standby. Record the setting with HDMI connected; reducing noise must not leave the subject out of focus.
Keep a sample with speech, a pause and a change in subject distance. Compare the noise in the file with what happens at the camera, without covering vents or the microphone. If testing Continuous AF OFF, check focus throughout the action and restore the intended setting afterward. If trying another microphone, record the level, position and path for comparison.
Also listen to the HDMI capture and backup output when they are part of the delivery. Record each sample’s times and which path you listened to, along with lens, microphone and fan mode.
The temperature and audio worksheet is blank. If a file will not open, preserve the data and follow the .mdt guide; continuity testing does not include deliberately causing an interruption.
Frequently asked questions
Does firmware 2.3 alone enable more than 60 fps when recording GH6 to SSD?
The supplement makes those modes conditional on using DMW-AC10 and DMW-DCC17 together. Record firmware, quality, power supply and Dynamic Range Boost before testing. A frame rate being selectable in the menu does not yet establish a complete take.
Will changing the SSD resolve every 60 fps limit on GH6?
First compare firmware, quality, Dynamic Range Boost and power supply with the manual. Identify the SSD and cable, and change one variable at a time. If the limit comes from a condition of the selected mode, buying another drive does not replace meeting that requirement; check the menu and a take through the intended path.
Do DMW-BLK22 and DMW-BLF19 provide the same GH6 functions?
DMW-BLF19 has documented restrictions and does not support external SSD recording. Panasonic identifies DMW-BLK22 and recommends a genuine battery. Check the model before interpreting a Battery message; physically fitting does not establish the same functions.
Does shutdown when enabling SSD prove that only genuine batteries work?
Panasonic recommends its batteries and details model-specific limits; that does not confirm the cause of that shutdown. Keep the message, exact battery, SSD and cable, and compare off-air using the documented power supply.
Does GH6 save a copy to SD or CFexpress while USB-SSD is ON?
The manual excludes card use and Double Card Slot Function in that state. If another copy is needed, prepare a separate path and check its file. An inserted card does not prove footage was recorded there.
Can I add a USB hub to power GH6 and record to SSD?
The SSD section excludes USB hubs, conversion adapters and extension cables. Prepare the documented power supply through another path and test the setup; the high-frame-rate addition in 2.3 does not authorize a hub.
When can I remove the SSD after a GH6 take?
End the take, set USB-SSD to OFF and wait for the icon to change to the card icon; only then disconnect. Keep the last file and check a copy. Do not remove the cable or power while the drive is still recognized as SSD.
Does an SSD on Panasonic’s list guarantee the full event session?
The list reports basic operation with specific models and conditions. Record the full code, capacity, format, firmware and cable, then test the intended duration and operation. Record which sample you reviewed and what remains pending; the list does not replace that test.
Can a GH6 thermal warning affect SSD recording and HDMI capture at the same time?
The SSD section allows for recording and HDMI to stop. Identify which paths depend on that camera and prepare a backup covering the interval and sound you need to preserve.
Can I use a duration obtained with S1II to plan a GH6 SSD take?
The duration obtained with another camera depends on its configuration and conditions. Record the GH6’s setup and test duration, operation and prior standby time. Check the additional capture separately too: the main take’s duration does not validate that copy.
Do AUTO1 and AUTO2 run the GH6 fan the same way?
They are different modes. Review Fan Mode in the manual and record what remains active after configuring the take. Also compare recorded audio; noise heard in standby does not verify an entire session.
Why does GH6 change SLOW to AUTO1 after I select a recording quality?
The manual documents this above C4K, above 60.00p or VFR above 60 fps. Check the final value with the selected format before recording the test.
Should I use Recording Max Temperature HIGH for a long handheld take?
Panasonic calls for STANDARD for handheld use. HIGH permits a higher threshold and requires observing the hot-body and support precautions. Agree on how the camera will be operated before testing duration.
Does all noise recorded by the internal microphone come from the fan?
Compare when it appears with focusing, operation and the fan. Keep a sample with speech and a pause before changing equipment.
Does Continuous AF MODE1 behave the same way when HDMI is connected?
In Creative Video mode, it changes to MODE2 with HDMI. Check focus and listen during standby and recording with the intended connection. If testing OFF to compare sound, also check whether the subject remains in focus.
Does a silent fan in AUTO2 indicate a failure?
Record the mode and check for an error message. If The fan is not functioning correctly. appears, follow the message section: the specified restart and consultation if it persists. Do not infer a fault from sound alone or continue prolonged use with a reported failure.
